I've heard from various people about their 2 hour GTT - they get to sit in an armchair, or lie down - for 2 hours. But I've never found a place in Canberra that's quiet enough to allow this. Today I found out I need to get the 2 hour GTT. I had the one hour one yesterday and spent the hour feeling very sick in the waiting room. I was embarrassed to be almost sick in front of people. I don't know how I'm going to cope with fasting AND a long wait AND the blood tests at various intervals, as I'm still getting morning sickness and the only thing that helps somewhat is food. Ideally it'd be great to lie down, but I'm guessing this just isn't possible anywhere?

Long shot, but anyone know of any?

From what I know, the only place that does the long GTT in Canberra is the Diabetes clinic at TCH. I have been there twice to do it in the last two weeks, they have the reclining armchairs but there are only 4 chairs so they only have 4 people doing it at once (maximum). And it's a 3 hour test, not a 2 hour one.

You could call the pathology in Queanbeyan to see if they do it (above the gp super clinic, pretty sure it's a Capital Pathology). It is reasonably quiet and they often have a room spare so you might be able to lie down. Otherwise the waiting room is pretty quiet.

Even if you can't find a quiet place I would let them know how you feel and that you may faint or vomit if sitting in the waiting room. They may take pity on you and find somewhere.

Thanks. I heard 3 hours, then 2. Unfortunately I could hardly hear the nurse/midwife, so have to call in tomorrow for the paperwork and will find out more then, I guess.

I think it's 2 hours but 3 tests? Or is it 3 hours wait and 4 tests? Ah, I have no idea. I guess soon I'll be very familiar with it.

They have you sit quietly for 1/2 hour, take blood, give you the drink, wait one hour, take more blood, wait another hour, take blood again and then you're done So about 2 1/2 hours really. Unfortunately I never got to the stage of having the second blood test as I threw up the drink both times but this is apparently extremely rare.

ETS: The nurse was wonderful. I was quite embarrassed but the other pregnant ladies were all very sympathetic. Just let the nurse know if you are feeling unwell and she'll keep a close eye on you.

It's 2 hours with 3 blood tests. One at the start, one at 60 min and the final one at 120 min.

it's a while since i did one now but i always did mine at calvary, in the path place near the cafe - which meant i could sit in the armchairs outside it to wait.

Ah, that's where I did my 1 hour. Didn't occur to me to wait outside. Good advice!

I'm not in Canberra (got here by the recent topics) but when I had mine the nurse let me go and sit out in my car while I was waiting and read a book.
