I had my dating scan yesterday and something strange happened that is worrying me. I am 7w5d (by my calculations and u/s measurements), but the sonagrapher could not find anything by abdominal scan. Which I thought was very strange.
She did an internal and did find the baby (gestational and yolk sac, strong 160bpm) but she said it "was hiding in the far corner" which is why she couldn't find it with the abdominal scan. It was still a little difficult to see tho and it's a strange looking scan....She also took quite a few pics of my ovaries too (4 more than they took of my dating scan with DD). Anyway, now I'm worried there is something wrong (perhaps ectopic?) and they are not supposed to tell me themselves. My GP apt is not until Tuesday afternoon which feels like an eternity away. So I guess I have two questions: 1) If the sonagrapher suspected an ectopic would they tell me or wait for my doc to tell me? 2) Has anyone had a normal pregnancy that couldn't be seen by abdominal scan at 8 weeks or "in the corner"? So confused... ETA: I have not had any bleeding/spotting. Have had mild cramping but had that with DD as well. Morning sickness has mostly subsided the last few days. ectopic is very serious, even if they didnt tell you, at 8 weeks they wouldnt just send you off to the doctor with a note, they would be calling the hospital to admit you as an emergency. i doubt its ectopic.

I can tell you for sure an ectopic would mean you were sent to the hospital or to your GP that day. It's I'd not safe to leave it 5 days in case it ruptures.
Maybe the "in the corner" comment was because she wanted to justify the difficulty she was having? Try not to worry. |

Thank you Knottygirl and Doctorseuss, that's a huge weight off my mind, you have no idea.
I know they are not doctors and not supposed to interpret the scans for you (well that's what my sonagrapher last time told me), but I was hoping something serious like that they would be allowed to say something. |

If it were an ectopic you would have been sent straight to emergency, it can be life threatening.
Perhaps your a little earlier along. |

Off topic, but recently my sonographer actually asked if I was sure that I had two ovaries!!!!!!!! Seriously!!!!!!! What?? I've had 2 chn, and no one has even had a problem before! I am 65 kg and 180 cm - so no extra padding issues either! This was after he used both internal and external methods. He did find my 'missing ovary' but after much prodding! Maybe they weren't very experienced??
Try not to worry.... I'm sure with an appointment that for away all is ok. X x |

Did you ask for a copy of the report that goes to the doctor? You can always wait to get the report or o back and pick it up. The report is what's the doctor will get.
I have had many early preg scans and even at 8 weeks I had to have an internal. Sounds normal to me |

X x I thought for over 10 years, and through approx 12 ultrasounds in the area, that I had only 1 ovary. It wasn't until after I actually gave birth that it came out of hiding lol! |

An ectopic pregnancy is a life threatening situation......I've been there, had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy (many, many years ago, was undiagnosed and was a lot further along than 8 weeks), and to recover from one is a life changing event. No way would you be sent away as if nothing were wrong if it was ectopic.
I once had a sonographer ask me if I had two kidneys. Yep, I do! |

Yeah my right ovary was hard to find it was really pushed over to the side and took my sonographer a bit to locate. I've had quite a few abdominal ultrasounds thanks to having an ovarian cyst years ago - so I know it wasn't always all the way out there!
OP - I'm pretty sure they would refer you to the hospital of your GP that day. It would be a huge breach of their duty of care to let you go home and potentially let it rupture. |
