My husband is working with Rio at Para, and we are talking about the possibility of going residential if a house becomes available.

I haven't lived in a place anything like Para, my husband has lived on stations around WA and has lived/worked remotely, so it doesn't bother him, we are trying to set ourselves up for the future which we think this is the opportunity for us.

So what's it like up there, apart from hot?! We are an outdoor family (camping, 4wding etc) so looking forward to possibly exploring

Well I worked up there at para before kids (about 2003-2004) and at the time there was no fifo camp, there was about 800 people and it was starting to boom again. There is a good swimming pool, Karajini NP is up towards Tom Price. There is a primary school and a dewsons type shop and a small hospital.

It would be good for families but yeah would I live there now? Unlikely only to get ahead on savings as with company housing you get discounted rent and power etc it is 5 hourish drive to Karratha.

That's our plan. Rent is $120 a month for a 4x1, bonuses, discounts. We want to buy a house and that fast tracks our plans

I was offered a job there and drove down from Port Hedland to have a look at what I was getting in to. I decided to not take the job because the town felt a bit creepy. Like Deliverance.

Lots of families there though. Might be a good option for a while to potentially save some cash, but the costs of living remotely are higher than in a city so factor that in also.

We have lived in the country before so that doesn't bother us. I figure its only for a couple of years. DH is up there now and says its lovely. Small and full of families.
