I'm thinking about getting a bike for my 2.5yr old for Xmas but not sure if I should just go straight for a training wheel bike or go to a balance bike first.
Which way did you go ? If you went with a bike, any recommendations ? |

Pros and cons to both.
A child can usually come off training wheels at around age 5-6. So at 2.5, you'll be on a training wheel bike for a long time. If the ground is uneven, a training wheel bike can't balance on it as the child can't tip it side to side to balance. On the flip side, a child is MUCH faster on a balance bike than a training wheel bike. We got a training wheel bike for our 3.5 year old to speed limit him in our inner urban area. Byk are good 'big kid' bikes. Any simple wooden frame balance bike is good for the younger kids. At 2.5 your child is on the cusp - but I would tend to go for the balance bike. |

We gave DS1 a balance bike when he was around the same age as your son and he loves it! It took him a month or two to get the feel for it but now, nearly 12 months on, he zooms everywhere!
We're actually giving him a bike with pedals this Christmas as he is totally envious of other people's pedals. But he is so confident on the balance bike I do think he's ready for a bike with pedals - hopefully without training wheels! |

I have started both my kids on training wheel bikes just so they can get a feel for it .
