Hi,
No - they are not the same thing... truffles are generally chocolate based. I don't make truffles, but I make a truckload of rumballs every year for us, family, friends and presents... they are really easy to make! Here is my recipe It's a family favourite - I learned how to make them from my Grandma, now I make them for her (she is 96)... 8 weet bix or vita-brits 1 tin condensed milk 1 handful sultanas 2 tablespoons cocoa 1/2 cup coconut Rum to taste More coconut (to roll) Crush the weetbix until they are small crumbs (by hand is fine). Add the coconut and cocoa, and mix. Then add the sultanas and mix. Then add the condensed milk, and mix well... Then add the rum to taste ( I use Bundy Rum, of course, but not sure of the amount, as I just pour a little in at a time until I am happy with the taste). Then pick up a small amount and roll into a ball, and roll in the extra coconut.. Put them in the fridge, as they are best eaten cold HINTS: - If the mix is too wet and not sticking together, crush up and add another 1 or 2 weetbix - Remember not to make the rum taste too strong, as they will mature in the fridge, especially as the rum soaks into the sultanas, and what may start out a good strength may end up too strong if they are in the fridge too long (Doesn't happen in this house though, they get eaten too quickly ) - And, a great tip for rolling them, when you are picking up the mix in your hands to roll a ball, first wet your hands under the tap, then just gently press them on a towel so they are still damp, it stops so much mixture sticking to your fingers... ENJOY! Amy |

The way I've always made them is:
1 packet of Marie biscuits crushed 1 tin condensed milk 2 tablespoons cocoa 2 tablespoons rum (I don't drink so I don't add it, though when I was a child we did) Handful of sultanas if you like them in it. Cococut for rolling the balls in Then just mix everything up, roll into balls and then roll them in the coconut. |

I always make these ones. The almond meal makes them a bit special and gives them a really nice flavour.

For the OP's question, no they're not the same. Rum balls contain rum and chocolate, and since you don't cook or bake it there's still the alcohol kick.
For truffles, my favourite would be melt-in-the-middle ones. You stick in caramel chunks inside, which makes the truffles extra special. This post has been edited by Airene: 10/12/2012, 04:29 PM |
