Stressed....Whose Stressed...Who Said That!
Hi,

I have high levels on my Liver tests, so now I have to have a Liver Ultrasound. I have been told I need to go on a Fat Free Diet the day before and fast on the day...which I need help on....

So what is fat that I can't eat?
I know this includes anything dairy...
But what else can't I have?

Has anyone had a Liver Scan?

The specialist mentioned it could be my Gallbladder causing this, but DH said he mentioned Gallstones, which I don't remember hearing.

I also have very low Vitamin D it's 29, because my body is not converting the sun into Vitatmin D I now have to take vitamin D suppliments.

Lynn

I would think fat free means - no dairy, butter, marg, oils, icecream, salad dressings, fat free meats - maybe give the ultrasound clinic a call and ask for the info for that test.

You may also not be able to eat high fat nuts?? Best bet would be grains, fruits and vegetables - with out anything on them except some herbs

If you want to get technical even fruits and vegetables have fats in them. Can't they give you a list? They probably mean no meat, dairy, olive oil, etc as PP mentioned.
I'd ring and ask.
Good luck!

I imagine it's a very low fat diet, rather than completely fat free.

It's only for a day, so stick to very lean cuts of meat/fish and fruits, vegetables and wholegrains. Milk is also quite low in fat.

Thank you for the replies,

The lady from the X-ray place said fat free and no dairy. So I think I'll just avoid anything dairy and watch what I eat...as in no cooking in fat, nothing like bacon or sausages, etc I never have fat on meat anyway, so that is no problem.

If I am still unsure ill ring the X-ray place on Monday and ask them.

Red meat will be out, as will chicken. Kangaroo has virtually no fat, as does venison. Prawns and squid are okay, too.

Potatoes, rice, lentils are all fine. Check the labels on the bread - I bet they'll want it to be <1.5% fat. If you have a French bakery nearby, ask about their baguettes. If they're just flour, yeast, water, they'll be perfect (and delicious).

Nuts, oils, avocado would all be out.

It'll be fine for only a day original.gif Hope all is clear!

I had a liver ultrasound done recently after discovering high levels on my blood test. they check your stomach area, your kidneys, liver and around the pancreas and gall area. from memory i wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything for quite a few hours beforehand. i wasn't told the fat free, dairy free thing though.

mine came back as liver disease. working my butt off now to try and reverse it, or at least halt it in its tracks.

funnily enough, i'm also extremely low in vitamin D.

good luck! try not to worry about it too much until you know something for certain. i had convinced myself i had liver cancer. don't do that to yourself!

So if I ate a prawn salad, consisting of prawns, lettuce, beet root, tomatoes, and onion I'd be fine....

As a Diabetic I need something with carbohydrates in, so can I have orange juice?

Lynn

16yr break - I have to fast on the day, well from 12am. From what I read the liver converts the vitamin D for use in the body, if its not working properly, neither will the vitamin D. They usually go together. I'm hoping its not liver disease....but I have a funny feeling sad.gif

Ohhh good luck. Will be thinking of you. I've had to do fat-free(ish) days for certain tests before. Here's what I'd eat:

Breakfast: I'd just make a good fruit salad.

Lunch: a big salad for with soft leaf lettuce (not iceberg as it might be rough on your system), tomatoes, mushrooms, chickpeas (abt 1.5g fat in 1/2 cup), capsicum, and a squeeze of lemon juice and a dash of lemon-pepper seasoning

Dinner: a nice vegetarian minestrone with tomato, zucchini, onion, peas, green beans, garlic, herbs, and cannellini beans (only 1g fat per cup if from a can), made with fat-free stock (I like Massel's "chicken style").

If you get hungry for a snack, go for fruit or some steamed veggies with a bit of lemon-pepper or soy sauce.

So that'd bring your fat total for the day to roughly 2-4g which is pretty darn low! And you'll get lots of good energy-giving carbs and nutrients to get you through the fasting day.
