I like the names Isla and Ava however I'd like to know which is more common. Our eldest has a very popular name yet is the only one in class with it. In Australia do you think Ava is more common than Isla? Do you know of anyone with these names? Which do you prefer and why? Thankyou

I know one of each so I'd probably rate them about the same in terms of popularity....and preference - I love them both. Not much help am I?!

I think they are both nice names. Ava is really really really popular though. There are about 15-20 kids in our rhyme time and 2 are named Ava, plus in our swim class there are 9 students and also an Ava there.

I have come across 3 children called Ava who were born this year, and know of several others.
I have only come across 2 people named Isla in my whole life, one during primary school (that was in the olden days I prefer Isla, but I also prefer Eva to Ava. Many Europeans pronounce 'Eva' as 'Ava' anyway. This post has been edited by Jillian_10: 06/12/2012, 09:45 PM |

We don't get many of either around here. But names Eve, Evie and Eva are very popular overall, and Ava is so similar to them (then throw in Ivy, Ada, Ella...) and personally, as much as I love all of these names, I personally would be avoiding them all IF a name being common was an issue for me (it's not, really).
(to me, it's a bit like saying "Hayden isn't common" but then look at Aiden, Jayden, Kayden, etc.) I do think Isla is different enough from those other popular names, and it's trending too but not quite as much I don't think? Well, I haven't met any at playgroups, mum's groups parks, libraries etc. Then again, I haven't met a Ruby yet. Got Sophie, Mia, sienna and mikayla everywhere though. |

I think Ava is more popular. Isla seems to be gaining popularity though.

Many Europeans pronounce 'Eva' as 'Ava' anyway. Funny you mentioned that, I was debating putting Iyla on my list of possibilities. I never thought of it as a form of Isla, I thought of it as a variant transliteration of Ayla... but now I'm worried people will read Iyla and just think I can't spell Isla? |
