Hi,

I think I am right in assuming that I will be paying for Christmas and boxing day at my son's daycare centre. I am not sure why this is. It is just because we have that day booked all year round. I just don't see how it is fair when there is no way a child care centre would operate on Christmas or boxing day? And I know that they still have to pay their staff but thats true of all businesses who will close and make no money on these days. To make it worse we also miss out on new years day this year as well.

Does anyone know why?

If the centre closes then you shouldnt have to pay - mine is closing for the week so Im not getting charged.

I do know of some that dont charge for public holidays but then their daily charge is higher to cover it.

So even though im not getting charged for the week - the other weeks I do pay are probably a bit higher than normal IYKWIM?

Eamons daycare centre doesn't charge for public holidays and they don't charge for the 2 week shut down after Christmas. But I am guessing a lot of centres who do charge claim their reasoning is that they still have to pay staff regardless of whether the kids are there or not

Because if you didn't have to pay for the public holidays, they would just charge you more for the days you were there - with total expenditure being the same over the course of the year.

People whose children attend on a Monday have this a lot more often

We don't pay for Christmas-New year period because the centre is closed. We do pay for all the other public holidays though since they still have to pay their staff and their rent etc.

The way I see it, you are paying for the reservation.

Our centre charges for all the public holidays throughout the year except the xmas period - they close for 2 weeks this year (in the past it has only been a week) and we aren't getting charged. I think it depends on the centre as to whether you get charged.

Having to pay for public holidays was one of the main reasons why we didn't end up putting DD2 in preschool.

Yep ours used to. Used to annoy the daylights out of me. Thjey also used to charge you for the time they were closed down over Christmas.

Their reasoning was it was to ensure we kept our place at the centre. *snort*

They did however, used to let you do make up days if your normal day was a public holiday.

Yes, I've copped all the public holidays this year as well. Bit annoying, but nothing you can do about it. They're putting their fees up $10 per day next year as well, so it's a double grrrr. I've applied for holidays on those days, so I'll only pay half fees. Is that an option at your centre?
