Should i be at all concerned about this? DS was 8.9kg about 3 weeks ago. He's now only 8.6kgs. He has learnt to crawl in the last week or 2 so he's pretty mobile. He's fully breastfed, sleeps 12hrs o/n and has 2 solid meals a day (pureed fruit in the morning and pureed pumpkin in the afternoon). I'm thinking it's just because he's moving around so much, but just want to be sure it's nothing more sinister original.gif

Was he measured using the same set of scales? It wouldn't be unusual for scales to measure 300g different between one place and another.

Having said that, I reckon crawling is the likely explanation. My DS slimmed down a little when he started crawling.

My baby lost a heap of weight when she started crawling too. I wouldn't worry too much, but keep an eye on it. My baby was up and down all over the charts, yet stayed happy healthy and hitting those milestones they bang on about.
Now at 2.5 she's only 11kg and hasn't been sick in a year, touch wood!

I would think crawling is the culprit. But definitely keep an eye on it. Depending on how you Lo has taken to solids I think I third meal would be in order too, and add a protein. If they are more active in theory they'll get more hungry top.

Mine always plateaued with weight or lost a tiny bit when they became mobile. Unless its noticeable I wouldn't be worried.

Thanks for your replies. He is meeting his milestones and he's generally happy and healthy. I was about to add a third solid meal to his diet, I'm just not sure what. He is a bit of an intolerance to dairy and wheat, so I'm trying to thing of something that he will enjoy. It wasn't this hard with my daughter.

I wouldn't worry about it as yet. It is quite normal for them to lose some weight when they start moving more. As long as he is still feeding and eating normally and is happy, don't worry. If the weight loss continues, then I would see a doc just to make sure.

OP does his allergies include rice cereal? Sounds to me that he needs some more fuel for his system in more a solid form so def time to introduce another meal to him I'd say.

I would want to keep an eye on things, because 300g is a big difference - unless you got him just before a big pooh/wee last time, and just after this time. I'd almost want a re-weigh to see if there was something missed!

However, if I were you, I would add in that third meal, and make it something high in protein or fat, just in case. We used lentils with DS, and also introduced yoghurt early on the advice of our MCHN. She said that it's usually the best tolerated of the dairy products, and is a good source for fat and protein. Avocado is also good. Carrot and broccoli aren't exactly high in protein or fat!
