Can anyone help me with some questions re tonsilitis in adults?

This is only the second time I've had it and I can not believe how painful it is. It started Sunday night and I saw the doctor Monday morning and started antibiotics straight away. How long is it usually for the pain to go away? The fever seems to have stopped but nothing else has changed much.

Is there anything else I can do? I've gargled with salt water - should I be trying something else?

Hi - sorry to hear you are not well.
Salt water may be good for treating the problem, but won't give you pain relief. Have you tried panadeine, or one of the stronger Nurofens?
There is a spray Difflam you can get from the chemist as well.

From someone that had tonsillitis for almost 9 weeks, I hope you get better soon. It is a horrible thing to end up with.

Try your over the counter pain medications and diflam sprays, if they are not working you can buy a numbing gargle (cepacol?) and if your still having trouble with the pain, you could ask your doc for something a little stronger.

I was taking panadeine forte at times and it only just took the edge off, but i did reduce the pain somewhat.

Don't forget to replace your toothbrush a couple of times and once again when you are sure that the tonsillitis is gone, as you can reinfect yourself.

Ahh it sucks doesn't it.

The pain will take a while to go, they have to heal. I found sucking on a icy pole to numb my throat before eating and taking pills helps. Also take anti inflamorties (ie nurophen) to help reduce the swelling.

Salt water does bugger all for me except make my throat sting!

For a sore throat I love the diflam forte throat spray.

I find gargling propolis tincture from the health food shop works best for me. It's an "alternative treatment" so maybe not your thing, but I'd tried salt water, Difflam, Betadine gargle...
The propolis was the most effective at treating/preventing. And sucking an asprin (I prefer Disprin brand) was the most effective for the pain. I seem to get tonsilitis once or twice a year. Also mints, your breath probably stinks

Thanks so much for the replies. I just went to the chemist and currently have quite a numb throat from difflam gargle. I also got nurofen plus etc.

the above helped for me as well. the pain takes a few days to go away depending on how bad you get tonsillitis. i have now had mine taken out from becoming dependant on antibiotics because of how many times i was getting tonsillitis. (6 times in 6 months then they got taken out) apart from any medication just try not to do anything and make your bed the most comfortable place to be. rest helped me lots with the help of medication and cold drinks or ice blocks.

it sucks it really does and i hope it goes away soon. i found that unfortunately tonsillitis with me was something my body had to ride out till it got rid of the virus.

adult tonsillitis suffered here.

I want them removed but the doctor says that three bad cases over winter wasn't enough.

I swear by Aspalgin. Dissolve in water and gargle. It's a pain reliever but when gargled hits right on your throat.

I find I am sore for about 4 days but it really takes 7 days to feel better - it sucks.
