I like Raquel much more.
The classic spelling is Chantal (shan-tahl) and I prefer that if I had to choose. But there's a lot of either other 2 syllable names with accent on the second syllable, or French names, or C names, that I like more. This post has been edited by la di dah: 03/12/2012, 10:08 PM |

NMS.
I'm not a fan of -Elle names as it is but it definitely seems dated to me. |

While I think the original French name Chantal is pretty if pronounced in the French way, I just can't warm to this anglicised (I think) version. The typical Aussie pronounciation of Shaaaantelle is grating. I also agree it feels dated.
Unfortunately Australians also butcher Simone and Danielle. Raquel as PP suggested is nice. |

Chantal is a gorgeous name. What got done to it after it was appropriated by the anglophones (especially those of the great south land)is not so gorgeous. That is my diplomatic best.
I have to conclude that it doesn't work so well in English. And nothing to do with strippers. ETA I see Susiebelle we posted at the same time. Great minds... This post has been edited by Gudrun: 03/12/2012, 10:38 PM |

I used to go to school with a Chantal, I used to think she and her name were so very elegant, her mother however was horribly strict and judgmental of all who were beneath her. But that was in NZ, it can sound very boganish and rough if spoken in a heavy ocka (/) accent, but then most names do lol. I dont think it is a stripper name
