Hi Ladies,

Am 33 weeks now and still no closer to finding a name for our little boy.

We have a short, one syllable surname starting with c and our current list includes:

James Arthur ( to be known as Jimmy or Jim when older)

Harrison James (Harry )

Thomas James (tommy while little but eventually Tom)

Thomas Arthur

Arthur James

(Arthur is a family name)


I think the first name needs to be 2 syllables at least because the surname is so short, DH isn't concerned...

Please comment on the above names and feel free to suggest because I am not 'loving' any of the above...

They are all classic names. I have a Harry and while I liked the name before he arrived, I didn't LOVE it. We went in with a long list of 5 boy names and 1 girl name (that we loved) and of course had a boy!

Now I LOVE the name Harry, so it will grow with your bub. Could you go in with a long list and see what he suits best when he arrives??

I really like James Arthur - I much prefer James as a FN than a MN, I think it's a bit too common in the MN spot. In saying that, James may sound a bit choppy having a one-syllable FN with a one-syllable surname - depends on the surname, but it does sound choppy with the one-syllable of the first barrel of my surname, even with the second barrel to balance it IYKWIM.

I like both Thomas and Arthur as names, but I don't think they match too well as a FN and MN - they have the same rhythm and the same "th" sound, even if the H is rather muted / silent in Thomas.

I don't mind Harry, but don't like Harrison - maybe Henry or Harris NN Harry would be better? I would also prefer James Harrison to Harrison James.

Arthur James and James Arthur are my favourites far and away, definitely.

I know its classic and impeccable etc. and so on, but for whatever reason Thomas really curdles my blood. Harrison is just aiight and not really my thing.

Recommendations: Henry, Miles, Isaac, Tobin/Tobias, Declan, Emmett, Wyatt, Owen, Patrick. These are mostly two syllable like you seem to gravitate to?

If you wanted you could really go for a longer names in the 3+ range since your last name is short. Alexander, Benjamin, Jonathan, Dominic, Alasdair, Zachary, Finnian/Finnegan, Nicholas, Donovan?

I probably now prefer Henry NN Harry to Harrison
