Hello, I am new to this site but I have a few questions, as this is my second pregnancy I kinda had an idea of what my first ultrasound would be like, but it was far from it, I was 11 weeks 4 days at the time the lady was extremely rude to me, this wasn't at a hospital just at an X-ray place I've been to many times during my last pregnancy, she out the gel near my belly button but not on the Doppler then put the Doppler right next to my right hip without gel and dragged it back and forth along my c section scar which was extremely painful and she kept in about a 4 cm box on my right hip not looking anywhere else, she scanned for about 5 mins not saying a word and taking very few photos then said " well that's all you can see at this stage" now to my point, I've had a hunch that I might be having twins either fraternal or identical but if I was she didn't look enough to try and see if I did. I have an anntenatal appt in 2 weeks so I will ask for another ultrasound then, my baby looked extremely small compared to my son at the same gest, is this normal for a singleton second pregnancy or a twin pregnancy?

One day at a time....
Hi,

Did you get a report of some kind? Pictures? At nearly 12 weeks, twins should have been quite obvious to the ultrasound technician.

If she wasn't any good, I would call up the x-ray place and complain and demand another scan with somenoe who is willing to communicate about whats going on!

Good luck
Michelle

I have never had twins so I wouldn't know about size etc but I think you were treated terribly! You should ring the clinic and speak to the manager and request another scan at their cost.

The ultrasound machines at a general X-ray are probably not as clear as those as a specialist obstetric places, so that may have been why baby appeared smaller. Did you get any pictures with a measurement, as that would be the clue?

I agree with PP that twins should be pretty obvious at that point.

I guess the other things is maybe the sonographer there is not supposed to/ authorised give results/ talk about it. Often they can be 'just the technition' and its the radiologist that then reads it and sends the report back to the GP for them to give you the results??

when i grow up i wanna be like me
I don't know about other twin mums but my twins were the same size as my singleton and measured ahead for dates (and there was no way my dates were out as I was being closely monitored through my cycles).

I don't think she would have missed a baby, not at that stage of pregnancy, it is very very obvious (well was for us anyway).

If you are unhappy with the experience though then put in a complaint so another woman doesn't have to go through what you did.

I agree with the PP, twins are normally similar sizes to singletons until later in the pregnancy. And at 12 weeks *most* twin pregnancies are diagnosed. There are exceptions to this of course, but I would assume you are having a singleton.

I am sorry she was so curt with you.

I had an extremely useless ultrasound tech. He kept leaving the room! Basically he had seen twins but had no idea what to do next, so he kept leaving the room to ask for help.
Meanwhile DH & I were worried sick that our baby wasn't OK. We were in for a bit of a shock. wink.gif
Even he was able to see twins at only 8 weeks.
Ultrasound techs can get it wrong... But it's unlikely to be identical twins at 11.5 weeks. They would have been able to see two spinal cords & two heartbeats, etc.
There's a small chance that it's fraternal twins, but more likely it's a healthy singleton!

Forgot to add - twins grow at exactly the same rate, in the first and second trimester, as a singleton. I would ask your OB about the ultrasound measurements.

My twins could be seen at 6 weeks on a dodgy little machine. I continued having weely scans and they were always clearly visible and that was on a portable little machine in an OB's room.
