DD is 7.5. She really wants the sneakers with wheels for Christmas- I think they are called Heely's?
And then, of course, I started reading a news website about how so many children have broken arms etc wearing them.

So what have been your experiences and what's the best brand if I do buy them?

Oh me too! (for me not for a child)

Alas I have nowhere to wear them living at the end of a big long gravel road... sigh.

Shall be watching this thread with vicarious joy.

It takes 46 muscles to frown, but only 4 to flip'em the bird
I bought a pair of them for my daughter about 18 months ago and she is now 7.5 years. She has never been able to figure them out and has never realLy been able to skate on them. She is a great roller skater and rollerblader however Heely's really from what I have seen are not the easiest things to wear and skate.

I don't have kids but after nearly being repeatedly run into at supermarkets & shopping centers due to kids wearing them I wouldn't touch them. They are not indoor "shoes" and should be treated the same way as roller skates and blades and never worn in shopping centers & supermarkets.

TBH the angle of the foot and pressure on the heel and knee can't be a good thing for developing bones & joints and imagine the stress on the bones & joints would cause problems later on

I wish I could get away with wearing them to work. Wheeling trolleys of books around and light speed! I will be super librarian!

I would assume that any injuries that occur from them would be similar to rollerblade/skate injuries, maybe more frequent due to possible longer usage at one time than blades/skates, also the illusion that they are actually shoes, I have seen a child attempt (very well, I must say) stairs at the shops with them on, something you obviously wouldn't attempt with blades/skates.

OP my DH was a paramedic for his entire working life and outright banned 2 things for our kids - Heelys and EVER using a skateboard, razor, skates, rollerblades et all without a helmet. Heelys are simply dangerous. And yes it mostly broken arms and wrists but toss on the occasional devasting head trauma and really why take the risk?

And just to point out DH was by no means a fun-buster, but in all his years on road that was the two things that he saw causing frequent significant harm to kids

Good luck

EFS

My only experience with them was dodging children using them inside when went to see the penguins down at Phillip Island. So negative, but that was more a person problem then a problem with the shoes

They looked really fun but I agree with PP's they are not proper shoes, the kids looked really awkward trying to walk in them.

I do see the attraction for kids but it is seriously annoying to try and share a footpath or a shopping centre walkway with them.
They are not shoes, they are roller skates and should only be used in certain locations and with the appropriate safety gear.

I had a pair in my teens they really hurt to just walk in them, I don't know if that was just a me issue but it felt like walking in heels.
