Just trying to figure out what we need from my son's book list for grade 5 next year.
On it there are a few things that I'm a bit puzzled by! Why would he need two pairs or scissors? Two wooden rulers and one plastic ruler? Do I really need them at the start of the year?? We're homeschoolers so this is the first time I've had to do this! Thanks! |

I find that strange for Year 5.
Our primary school does tend to ask for extras to allow for kids who didn't bring anything in but really only for Kindergarten to year 2. And even then its more like 6x glue sticks and extra pencils etc and not extra rulers and scissors. By Year 3 at our school they have their own everything. They will get told they need heaps of glues sticks and pencils, pens and highlighters etc but they are only for their own use so no they don't really need the whole lot all for the first day of school. But at least 2 is good. (one then another to spare just in case) |

My kids' school puts the spares away in the cupboard so that they are accessible straight away when something gets broken or goes missing.
Otherwise you have some kids constantly borrowing off others because they never get around to telling their parent they need new equipment and that becomes disruptive. Anything that doesn't get used comes home at the end of the year. This post has been edited by *Tess*: 02/12/2012, 04:15 PM |

I buy everything that is on the book list. Extra's are put away at school and handed out as needed. I never need to top-up supplies though the year. Anything not used comes home at the end of the year.
You might think they won't need two two pairs or scissors or two wooden rulers but believe me, it's crazy the amount of stuff they go though. It just easier to get what's on the list, even if you think they might not use it. I get the book list filed though the local Newsagent the school is going though and it's so much easier. No running around looking for stuff. Just hand the list in and it's all done! I find it sad that the general consensus is that teachers put extras on the booklist to supply kids who don't bring their supplies. That's generally not true. Most teachers I know supply those kids with stationery out of their own pockets. (I know I do.) It may seem weird to put 6 or 8 gluesticks on the booklist, but the kids really do go through that many. Same with pencils - I swear they eat them!
The only reason I can see for the 2 pairs of scissors is for loss of one pair. If your son's name was on last year's pair, and he hadn't lost them along the way, they really should have come home again. As for the rulers, maybe one is for loss and the other is for another subject. Other than that I really can't imagine the need for 3 rulers. But then, I don't teach yr 5, I currently teach prep. |

Is the list grouped by subject? If so each teacher has probably just specified what is needed for each subject...just get as many as you think you might need.

It just easier to get what's on the list, even if you think they might not use it. Going by the number of un-named scissors and rulers left in my labs, I would believe it. |
