Hi there
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a baby that is unsettled after feeding during the day only? My little one is 9 weeks old and gaining weight very well. She feeds about 8-9 times a day. She has always had some feeds where she is a bit unsettled however now it is basically every feed during the day. I have a fast let down so I have tried: - feeding on back - expressing the beginning of the milk - feeding her in upright position None of this seems to change things. Her pattern seems to be to feed ok for a while, then start to get upset and come on and off the breast and then scream for a bit cycling her arms and legs. She then settles down and seems happier to keep on feeding. She seems to feed a bit frenetically to start with but when she calms down it is slower and you can see her visibily relaxing and sometimes falling asleep. I sometimes wonder if she is getting a lot of gas as she seems to suck in some air when feeding, but I don't know what to do about that, nor do I understand why she is fine at nighttime. This is my second bub, and the first was a dream feeding wise so this is new territory for me! |

Have you tried burping her when she starts to come on and off?
She might be more relaxed at night (sleepier), so sucks in less air during the night feeds. |

My DS was always ok at night but would scream after every day feed from about 2 weeks old. Is your bubs spilling lots? If so maybe get her checked out for reflux.

My first thought is supply. How's your supply? I always think that when I hear of the pulling on and off and crying thing - my DD did that and it turned out I had low supply. I had no idea and thought it could have been gas, tiredness, fast or slow letdown, it never occurred to me there just wasn't enough milk. She wouldn't do it at night because there was more milk as she went longer between feedings. A lactation consultant picked it up and then I worked towards building my supply, and now I have no issues.
It might not be supply with you as she is gaining weight, but maybe visit a lactation consultant to check anyway, can't hurt |

Hmm perhaps it is about being more relaxed at night. She doesn't spill much milk at all.. just a little posset here and there. My DD1 was a projectile vomiter so I have enjoyed not being covered in regurgitated milk all the time.
My initial thought was maybe it could be reflux as well but I am wondering if she is just being colicky albeit starting at 9 weeks is rather late isn't it? My milk supply is very good and that has been confirmed by a lactation consultant. Why don't these kids come with instruction manuals.. would make life easier :-) |

My dd and I went through the same thing - the lc said it was a fast let down. Dd only did it during the day too. Sorry to say changing feeding positions didn't really help, but I ended up feeding cross cradle, got a milk bar feeding pillow so that I could stroke dd's head while feeding which helped calm her a bit. She eventually grew out of it and feedings still going well at six months. Good luck.

I have the same issue... Screaming only during/after day feeds. I do suspect its fast letdown/low supply too, so was interested in axiomae's response.Hopr you find out whats causing it, i know i find it very upsetting myself when my LO does this :-(

Dd was similar at that age. She fed best if I walked around while she fed. I used to put her in a sling and pace the lounge room. As soon as I sat down she would start fussing again. Rocking a bit and patting her bottom helped if I was sitting down. She was ok if I laid down and fed as well. I'm not sure what it was about. She was fine at night and grew out of it after a couple of months.
