Psychotic episodes in young children, Anyone have any experience?

Long time member gone anon for obvious reasons. I have a 7yo son with high functioning autism. I suspect he is starting to have psychotic episodes. He has been having some incredibly violent episodes lately which he appears to have to no memory of later. While he has always had meltdowns etc, these are different and he completely zones out and is unresponsive to everything unless psychically removed from the situation which then seems to trigger something and he "comes back", calms down and carries on like normal. I'm very worried these episodes might be psychotic episodes. What do you think? The paed brushed it all off last time we spoke to him about it. I've booked an appointment with the gp but I don't know what to do.

Its not some kind of low grade seizure is it ? If its new, I think you should review with Paed. Are you able to film it ? Sounds incredibly distressing, thinking of you!

No. The level of violence and intensity of these outbursts is very out of character for him. Everybody has noticed a drastic change in the last few months and it's just getting worse. Could a seizure cause violent behaviour? We did review with the paed, he wasn't interested. This post has been edited by Scared&Worried: 30/11/2012, 06:13 PM

Has he had a growth spurt/hormone burst? I only ask because around the same age Caelan started going off like a frog in a sock.

Can you get a referral to a child psychiatrist? Especially if the paed is blowing you off? If you're in Q, I can suggest a couple. And one to avoid.

How distressing! I echo what others have said -- you need either a new paed OR need to get in to see a good child pscyhiatrist pronto. I can't believe that your current paed was so dismissive of these episodes!! I really hope that you are able to get some answers soon.
