Is it safe to run while pregnant? including 1st trimester or should I wait or not run at all and just go for brisk walks?

I was advised by my OB that if you are already fit and healthy and you have no pregnancy complications, then yes it's ok to run. In fact it's good for you and the baby. Contrary to popular belief, it can't cause shaken baby syndrome.

I ran with #3 till I was about 9 weeks. Started getting a bit uncomfy then. But I've heard that it is fine to do so if you are already an established runner (ie. don't take it up when you're pregnant!).

A friend of mine ran a half marathon when she was 7mths pregnant. She was a runner before though. She did her last 'run' at about 38 weeks. She made up for all the running I didn't do.

Basically, if you were already running you can continue what you were doing but you shouldn't try something new.

The general rule is not to do anything new. So, if you we're running before you were pregnant it is fine to keep going.
But the main thing (as I understand it) is not to overheat. So, be careful with the weather, or exercise indoors. But above all else, if you feel uncomfortable, stop!! But you may just find it is a good cure for morning sickness and nice to do something normal! |

Just watch your pelvic floor ... when it starts to feel like a cannonball bouncing on your pelvis, good time to stop.

Basically, if you were already running you can continue what you were doing but you shouldn't try something new. So i use to run about 20 mins but stopped running for since June and haven't run since. Does this class as something not knew? I was planning on just doing 5 mins on 3 mins off or something. I'm really worried about gaining too much weight especially since I am constantly hungry even straight after a meal. |

Hi,
I am a runner and I ran with twins until about 24 weeks, it started to feel a bit weird after that so I just did brisk walks. You can get a belly bra especially designed for runners, it wraps around under your stomach and supports the bump so it doesn't bounce at all. I just googled running belly bra and it coame up. It is a OSFA, you just losen it as you get bigger. Agree with others though, watch this heat - treadmills at gym are good, and don't start doing anything that you weren't already doing. |

It's ok to run but mind that your joints will be extra loose because of pregnancy hormones so the risk of injury and trauma to the joints is increased.
