i have read preivous threads regarding this but all 2009 i when public in last time but the town was small and not worth going private.

and also which hospital is better...

i'm booked in at Canberra Hospital, at the antenatal clinic. i've never seen the point in going private (at least for me, uncomplicated pregnancies and births, and very happy with midwife led care), and i've heard a few things lately that have put me off the birth centre.

So far i'm happy with the care, they are on the same wavelength as what i am in regards to certain things, and the reassurance that they can get the right care for me if anything goes wrong is great.

Hospital choice would all depend on where you live, i would imagine (we're southside, so the idea of traveling to calvary in heavy labour put me off big time).

Just remember it seems that things book out early here (it took me over 10 weeks to get an initial appointment at the clinic), so you will want to make a choice soon

thank you, thought that would be the case. i when public had no issues with the midwives and ob that i got. calvery is close to me the woden.

I'm going through the antenatal clinic at TCH as well. I've seen the Ob too as my pregnancy hasn't been such smooth sailing. Everyone has been great and I'm really happy with the level of care so far. I'll be having a caesarian in the next 3 weeks, will have an ultrasound (with foetal med unit) and Ob visit booked between now and then as well as another midwife check up. Couldn't ask for more!

My SIL is through Calvary public, she has quite a serious complication with him pregnancy and she's been happy too.

From all I've heard, there's not that much difference between public and private here.

I went private 18 months ago and although the nurses were nice my ob was a tool (true colours came out after birth) and my DD ended up being transferred to TCH when she was 1 week old. SCN at TCH was great, nurses were lovely and I'm currently booked in with the CatCH program for this baby.
Personally wouldn't bother wasting my money going private again when everything you and your baby could need are available publicly. That's just my experience though...

I liked my private birth, but mostly for the private room and my choice of OB.
A friend went public with her baby 3 or so months ago through Calvary public and it sounded really good,. enough for me to almost wish it had been like that for mine 2 years ago.
If I lived on that side of town, I'd go public for sure.

I've been in both public & private at Calvary. I preferred the public midwives & the care they gave me hands down. DS was in the SCN though, so it's a bit different to most bubs, I guess.
I'll go private again next time so I get my OB cause he was great in my emerg situation, but wish I could then stay in the public ward!
