Should this be fixed for free?, tradesman question

We have an evaporative air conditioner on our house. When we went to use it last summer it didn't work so we rode out the few hot days. I was adamant that with a small baby and at home we needed to get it serviced/fixed/replaced for this summer. Early October we had a guy come round, look at the unit and replace a part. Now, the first hot day of the year and the unit is not working. We need to use a remote to control the unit and the remote appears not to be working and turning the unit on. This was the description of our original fault to the tradesman, but the part that was replaced was in the unit itself, not the remote. I've called the guy and he can't come round until Sunday. Do you think that the repair should be free or at minimal cost given that the problem is as originally described? I didn't ask him on the phone if we would be charged for the call out. Given that the original repair was $500 and we'd decided that if it was more than that we should just get a new unit, I'm loathe to spend any more money on it. However, it seems pretty stupid to have just spent $500 and now decide we need a new one.

I'm going to ask what may be an incredibly obvious question.... have you checked the batteries in the remote control?

I think it's quite important to check it have it running for a least 10-15 mins a day for a few days just to make sure it works. I am in the mind frame that it should have been tested a few times if its faulty. no way you can prove it was fault when he fixed it.

Was going to say the same thing as Casime. Replace the batteries in the remote before you do anything else.

Surely he tested it when he repaired it? What type of control do you have? The a/c in our current house has no control panel, only a remote. We find ourselves waving the remote around, going from room to room pressing buttons and hoping for the best. I find it very unreliable (even with new batteries) and would never install this model myself.

Yep, brand new batteries in the remote. It was tested when he repaired it but only for a short time as it was a cold day. We haven't needed to turn it on since. I guess I'll wait to see when he comes to see if the problem is the same or appears to be a new one. And if he charges for call out.
