My 9 week old DS has suffered from severe silent reflux since he was just 2 weeks old. He has been on Losec since 4 weeks and since 5 weeks has also been on Zantac and Pepti Junior formula as he would not drink more then 20ml at a time and would scream in pain for 18hrs every day. Since starting on medication he has started screaming less however is still in alot of pain for most of the day. He is still only drinking 60ml a feed every 3 or 4hrs. We have tried scheduled feeds but that only made it worse. He has not even put on800g since he was born (he is currently putting on only 20-40g per week). He has been in and out of hospital and seen every kind of specialist imaginable but noone has any ideas. The dietitian had given us a different ratio of formula to use, however they didnt cacate it right so he ended up on less.
We have tried everything to get our paed to look at doing something to help him however he refuses to until he loses weight. It has started to effect his development an I do not want him to get any further behind in weight of developmentally. Has anyone else had this issue or have any suggestions on what we can do. My husband and I are going insane! |

Have you tried giving him baby probotics? My baby has thrush and reflux. We started her on them at around 4 weeks and within two days she was a different child. She is now 4 months and if I miss a day or two her symptoms reappear.

Have you looked at whether there is any other underlying issues?
My DD had severe silent reflux and screamed for 16 hours a day until she was almost 4 months old. It was maddening and very frustrating not be able to help her. Part of the issue for her was also that she was also lactose intolerant and highly allergic to soy. We really had to experiment with formulas to sort it out for her (my partner wasn't able to breastfeed due to medical issues). Can you try a different formula? |

Thanks for the replies.
Pepti junior is a prescription formula for babies with a milk protein intolerence and who are allergic to soy. He has improved since starting on it but still very bad. He has been tested for lactose intolerance and this is not the case. I have looked into probiotics but no one I have discussed it with was aware of any that can be used for babies that young. I am heading back to the GP next week so will raise it again then- anything is worth a try! |

Do you wear him? Granted my babies reflux wasn't as severe as your poor boys, but I fairly much wore her in my ergo carrier during her awake hours and she slept in my arms because I couldn't lie her flat.
I'm sorry no advice on FF, I BF my girl. I would be trying to arrange another paed though. I had to fight tooth and nail to get a diagnosis and she wasn't medicated until 16 weeks. Best of luck with everything. |

My DD was the same and only ever improved when we gave her the presciption medication Zoton. It was a miracle cure!!! Half a tablet ever night (they are strawberry flavoured and dissolve in theire mouth - she loved them) and after two weeks she was pain free, started drinking happily and putting on weight etc. amazing! Zoton apparently stops them producing stomach acid and is not to be used after about 12 months when you wean them off it. We did this and she is now fine without it. Good luck!

Can you see another paed for a second opinion? Waiting until weight loss is ridiculous. He is in distress (as are you!).

Hi, congratulations, you are doing so well! My little man only got diagnosed with silent reflux (not as bad as yours though) just a couple of weeks ago and it's been so hard..
One thing I found that has really helped has been chiropractory. Our little man was engaged for 5 weeks before being born and I noticed following birth that one side of his body didn't work as well as the other side (with feeding etc). It turned out that the affected side was involved in digestion too. I was very sceptical when my CHN mentioned to go and see a chiropracter, but it has helped so much! I would only go and see a chiro that is VERY experienced with children, I can't stress that enough... This post has been edited by eclare86: 28/11/2012, 05:39 PM |

We also had to deal with silent reflux and went to see a chiropractor that gave us some baby-biotics. At the same time we also started Nexium (after being on Zantac and Losec previously) so I don't know if it was the Nexium, the chiropractor or just getting that little bit older (4 months) but we finally started getting some relief. Wish you all the best!!

OP, I don't have any advice but this does sound really miserable for your little one and it's tough on you and your DH. I just want to send you a cyber hug and hope it will resolve soon.
