Hi,
DS is almost 2 and i think we may have to introduce a bed soon as he has worked out how to climb into the cot (not because he wants to sleep but to get his dummy/ bed teddy that stays in his cot during the day), i figure it won't be long before he attempts to climb out and may hurt himself. I was hoping to hold off for a bit longer because he has only in the last few months be able to be left in his cot to go to sleep without me sitting beside him. He still calls out for a cuddle, kiss, drink, poo ect so i am back and forwards settling him for about 20 mintues before he actually goes to sleep. I just can't see him actually staying IN the bed, he will be in and out of the room and im worried i will have no choice but to go back to sitting beside him untill he is alsleep which takes ages as he chats to me and stays awake longer when im in the room. So any tips for making the transition a smooth one? How did you encourge your little ones to stay in bed to go to sleep? Did you have a bed rail at first to prevent them rolling out? Also did you give them a pillow once in a bed ? (he has never used one in his cot) TIA |

DD was 17 months when we moved her to a bed. DS was due in two months and we needed the cot.
We dismantled the cot and put the bed in exactly the same place in her room. On the bed was just a fitted bottom sheet, like her cot, no pillow and she slept in her sleeping bag. We bought a bed rail from Target and put a gate on her door. I expected drama but she was absolutely fine. She's 2 now, the gate is off the door so she can run into our room in the morning. She'll stay in her room all night and call if she needs us. I introduced a pillow when she was about 20 months as I found it kept her the right end up in the bed. |

Ive found in my family its best to stay away from different mattresses and pillows when changing and keep it as similar as possible, it just establishes a pattern

TBH I would be delaying it as long as possible.
