I've been researching tablets for my husband and had almost decided on the Google Nexus 7 until I read the "Poor Man's Ipad" thread.
I'm a bit freaked out by the "wi fi only" aspect. From what I had read you can get wifi only or 3G enabled but perhaps I am wrong? If it is wifi only what on earth is the point if you can only use it in your house (assuming you have wifi) or in a place with a wifi hotspot. This leads me to mobile phone hotspots which I had heard of but pushed to the back of my techie overloaded brain. I have an iphone 4 which, I presume, I could set up as a hotspot then the nexus could piggy back of that when we aren't at home. But then wouldn't I have to be in close proximity to dh (who only has a super dodgy android phone that doesn't seem to do much at all) for him to use it? Please help.... |

Even Apple make wifi only devices. You can buy a pocket wifi hotspot with prepaid data which you can just take away with you. TBH I very rarely use 3G data on my phone so probably wouldnt spend the extra on a 3G tablet
Otherwise look at a Samsung Galaxy 3G tablet |

I also say to go with the Google Nexus. It has features that "i" items don't have, like USB ports and the ability to transfer documents without having to use iTunes - click and drag is soooo much easier. Also a kinder price - I got ours online 32GB for $279 which I was pretty happy with
I did plenty of reading, comparison reviews etc and found this one was recommended over other android tablets |

My DP is a big tech head who had a love affair with Apple for over a decade. In the last 2 years he's replaced all his apple devices with Androids which I never thought would happen. He LOVES his Nexus 7.
Get the Nexus. Apple have crappy specs and are overpriced. |

I really WANT the nexus but my husband will want to use it outside the home (ie work, holidays etc). I'm having trouble seeing the point if its not particularly mobile. I know I can buy a hotspot for a couple of hundred dollars but that kind of doubles the cost of the nexus...... Or can I get hotspots cheaper than that?

I piggy back my wifi only ipad mini off my android Samsung galaxy s phone ( which has 3G).
I would never bother paying for separate 3G on a tablet. dH has 3G on his ipad and uses his ipone for data 95% of the time. |

I have the Nexus 10. Awesome.
I go online at Wi-Fi hotspots or tether it to my phone's 3g connection. Also, while at home, I put plenty of offline content on it (books, magazines, TV) for when it's not convenient to connect. I guess the question is, crappy as it is can your DHs phone be set up as a Wi-Fi hotspot? It'll depend on the version of android it's running. |

A tablet can still do a lot of things without internet - eg playing games, typing, watching a movie, reading an e-book, photo stuff...
