I have had swelling, been dizzy and had swollen ankles for the last 3 days. So today I went to the clinic where my ob works and my blood pressure is up a bit and I have traces of protein in my urine. So does this mean I have pre-eclampsia? Or does it just mean I could be getting it? Could my next urine test be protein free or is this highly unlikely? Also if it is pre-eclampsia is 29 weeks early to have it? All the people I have known that have had it have been a lot closer to the end of their pregnancy

I think you can have protein in yur urine if you have a urinary tract infection also. You really need to ask you dr. I would think if they though you had pre-eclampsia they would have told you and would be doing something about it.

You might be what my midwives were calling 'red-flagging' for PE, which meant that I had a bit of protein in my urine and my blood pressure was creeping up. They ended up inducing me but not until 40w3d.
Don't worry too much, you might stay this way for the next 11 weeks. FWIW, they told me they no longer consider swelling to be a sign of PE - but I had it with both my pregnancies and I got late onset PE both times. |

They are just keeping an eye on me at the moment, when I first got there my blood pressure was 140/90 then they check again bout 20mins later and it was 130/80. With my last preg I had prefect blood pressure of 120/80 for every visit. I am also a little dehydrated so was wondering if maybe that could be causing the protein trace? As I have never had protein before. They told me to rest as much as possible with feet up until next visit in two and a half weeks

Protein by itself isn't necessarily an indication of pre-eclampsia, but combined with your other symptoms I would be a bit concerned. Good that they are monitoring you, I would be following all their advice.
At your stage its still possible to have pre-eclampsia. Look after yourself! |

Also just because you don't have proteins does not mean you are in the clear. My sister developed HELLP eclampsia and didn't get proteins until three days after bubs was born via emerg full GA c/s at 35 wks.

Yes you can develop pre eclampsia at 29 weeks. The swelling could be from the summer heat too. It's not common to get pre-eclampsia with your third/fourth baby unless of course this baby has a different father.
As well as protein in your urine, your diastolic BP (the second number) must be 15 mmHG above your normal reading (plus other symptoms). Your OB will keep an eye on it and probably even do a blood test and a formal ultrasound. This post has been edited by =R2=: 27/11/2012, 03:27 PM |

This baby and my 1 year old have the same father the older two have a different dad, so that would make sense |

For me with my pregnancies it was associated with UTIs (and I got lots of them) which was linked to my kidney disease. Best to ask professionals though.

This recently happened to me, I delivered at exactly 40 weeks, I had protein in my urine, and BP was going up.. my daughter is now 12 days old and my bp is up and down, but thankfully the urine is fine |
