Wishing, and hoping, and thinking, and praying
Just been reading some articles on the dangers of Soy. As i was about to post on here another danger article popped up on FB. This has me really worried now as both my girls are on Soy, as recommended by our Paed. Has anyone heard about this? Im not sure of an alternate we can use - surely if it was that bad our Paed wouldnt have suggested it?

I have read soy is a pseudo oestrogen. I'm not sure if that is true medical info or internet scaremongering. I'm sure someone on here will know though.

I will bet if a paediatrician with many years of studying and experience, it will be ok.

I did a quick google, not much medical info came up, but more sites where people just discuss their concerns. Like anything that's introduced to a baby (or human) there are risks and benefits. The paediatrician would consider it, maybe give him a ring?

I know with DS1, when he was diagnosed with food allergies the paed allergist we saw did not like advising parents of MALE children under the age of 6 months to feed with soy formula. In his opinion, the phytoestrogen content was too high given the high volume per kilogram of milk consumed in young infants. It wasn't an issue for us as I was breastfeeding anyway. DS1 drinks soy milk now, but I really try to limit it.

Can you talk to your paed on the phone MissJoads? There are other formulas available, but they are prescription based. PeptiJunior is an extensively hydrolysed cow milk protein based formula and most babies with cow milk protein allergy/intolerance handle it just fine as the protein is so broken down the immune system can't recognise it. Of course it would depend on why your girls are on the soy formula to start with.

My 14 month DD is on PeptiJnr and when her paed put her on this (she was about 3 months old) he was adamant that he didn't believe Soy was suitable for babies under 6 months. I don't think he went into specifics but can vaguely remember him saying there was no nutritional value in soy for babies less than 6 months. So, if your paed suggested it I'm sure it's fine for your girls, given their age. Good luck.

Of course there is nutritional value in this for babies under 6 months. If it wasn't they would all starve. If it wasn't up to the national stand for formulas it wouldn't even be on the shelf.

I wouldn't personally be giving a boy a soy formula because of the phytoestrogen content. Girls are a bit different.

But I'd contact the paed and talk to him/her about it.
