There was a confirmed case of CP at DS's daycare two weeks ago. He has been a bit off for the last few days, and I noticed a slight red spotty rash on his face yesterday, however this could have been a reaction to the new sunscreen I used and the fact it was a really hot day (heat rash?). His temp was 37.5 (underarm) but last night he was fine. Now today he has been sick and the rash has gotten worse on his face, and looks like it has start to spread
So at 21 weeks pg and feeling a little unwell myself I am getting a bit concerned! I know I have immunity to VZ, and DS has been vax'd, but I'm still worried. I am booked in to the first GP appt available tomorrow, so not looking for expert medical advice here, just wondering if other people have had children who have had CP, does this sound familiar? If it is CP, is there anything that can be done for me and baby? I've read if you're going to contract CP whilst pregnant, this is a fairly low risk period, but I'm still freaking out. Aargh... not happy! This post has been edited by duck-o-lah: 30/11/2012, 02:06 PM |

I got chicken pox at 11wks and they did the same thing. Within 24hrs I was feeling so much better. OP, they are right that the time you are at in your pregnancy is better if you are going to get CP. |

We recently had a scare with some friends kids coming down with CP and I was about 19 weeks. We were with the kids all day the day before the spots appeared. I had a blood test that showed immunity so nothing further was done. The kids didnt get it but i was nervous for 3 weeks afterwards.
If my blood test showed no immunity the doc was going to give me the antibodies I think but it needs to be done quickly so I would go to the doc asap. It sounds more like hand foot and mouth (with rash on face - not usually how CP starts) than chicken pox but I would get it checked out either way. Both CP and HFM are around in our area at the moment. I know its a worry but when we were going through this the OBYN wasnt concerned at all as I had the immunity which gave me comfort! He said it was highly unlikely I would get it and If I did it would be a lesser case. He also said the second trimester is the safest time too. |

This is probably irrelevant - but I can remember when I had chicken pox as a kid I didn't get the rash until I was already pretty sick... I can remember being tired and not feeling myself (We were on holidays and I just wanted to lie around instead of swimming and playing at the beach) and the rash, I think, broke out on my chest first and then went to my arms. I only had one pock on my face.

All clear!
GP says definitely not CP, but sent me off for a blood test anyway. Thankyou for your replies, it's always nice to have some reassurance with these things. |

Hmmm... just got a call from the docs, she wants to see me about my blood test
I was tested for VZ immunity when I started my job in August and I know it's all good (I ran the test myself!) so I wonder what this could be about? VZ serology was the only thing I was being tested for... worried now |

OP, any illness during pregnancy is scary but I don't think you have to worry too much before your appointment.
In a study of 1373 pregnant women with confirmed varicella (chicken pox), only 9 cases of congenital varicella occurred and these were ALL before 20 weeks (weeks 13-20 are higher risk). No cases occurred after 20 weeks. The risk between 13-20 weeks is only 2%. http://www.perinatology.com/exposures/Infe...a/Varicella.htm There is treatment available for varicella during pregnancy to reduce the risk of transmission Hopefully the recall is completely unrelated - usually GPs will order standard tests like full blood count, electrolytes, liver function tests etc when sending blood. |
