DD is not far off 10 months old. for the past 2 months I have been giving her water in a sippy cup, now I am wanting to start expressing 1 feed into the cup.
We have 2 types that she likes, the heinz baby basics trainer cup with handles and the tommee tippee discovera. My question is, how should she be drinking from the sippy cup? She doesnt tilt the cup enough to get water out, so we hold it for her. With the heinz, she drinks from it the same as she breast feeds, sucking and swallowing, no choking from fast flow. With the discovera, the flow is faster and we have to take it out of her mouth after a couple if sips otherwise she starts coughing and spluttering. Should I stop holding her cup? I live in far north QLD, so temperatures are up near 40 daily, I dont want her dehydrated! She does hold the cup by the handles and try and drink, just doesn't tilt it enough to get water from it. So should she be sucking, or sipping? |

I just do both with my 11 month old so he can get used to a variety of drinking cups. Mind you it makes no difference - if there is milk in the bottle he won't touch it. If it's water he's all over it, suck or sip.
Obviously over time sipping becomes a more common drinking method but kids will suck from some kinds of water bottles indefinitely I think so it really doesn't matter, as long as they can sip too. |

Thanks Niggles, I really hope DD will take milk from it!.
Should she be holding it up and dinking from it herself by now? She does hold it and try, but doesnt tilt it far enough to get water. |

Neither of mine could do that at this age. I can't even remember when they could but I'd say you've got a while yet. Two handled cups help with that. You can also get specially designed tilted cups around the place but I've found the simplest designs to be best all round.
