Hi all,

Is it still worth purchasing a "swing". My DD is 5mths... occasionally we have "one of those days" where I can't get anything done. We've borrowed my sisters, but she'll be needing it soon with her next bub on the way/due.

Should I just stick out? How long did you use the swing for your LO?

Just after some advice.. they aren't cheap!

Mine was an expensive waste of money. The vibrating bouncy chair we borrowed was a LIFESAVER! So if you don't have one already, get one. They can sit in them while you shower, you can feed them in it when they start solids etc...

My daughter wasn't ever really fussy enough to need the swing. Especially at 5mths old. We packed it up when she was 7mths and we moved house Would only really use it to try and get her to sleep if she was fighting it at that age.

The swing we have has an age/ weight limit of 6months or 9kg. If your DD is close to either of those I think you'd wasting your money. Other brands may be different though (we have a fisher price 'rainforest' swing).

My exactly 7 months old bub I suspect will grow out of it in the next 1-3 weeks. It holds 11kg (he is 10) but the issue with my first child and I presume with this one is they start to have the strength to sit up and grab the mobile that is above them and then it gets dangerous. He is just starting to reach and grab so I have removed all dangly bits which are grabbable but there are other bits which I can't remove so I know ill have to retire it soon.
They are very big items to store between babies.
If you think there is a very good chance of borrowing your Sisters for future babies then maybe think twice. But if you can't, then trust me u will get the use second time round so get one!! And get rechargeable batteries!

Our swing had a weight limit of 9kg. We stopped using it at 6 months with our girls because they were all 9kg by then. It stopped swinging when they got too heavy.

I would go secondhand because you will only get a few more months out of it.

Go for a bouncer instead, and you can get them second hand near new much cheaper too. Much more practical, and easier to take with you room to room than a swing. You'll use it for subsequent/friends babies too. And the toddlers might bounce on them, but not swing wildly on it like a toy as the toddlers I know that do on the swing chair I have!!

All my girls used the swing. We have a Fisher Price papasan cradle swing swing, I think it holds up to 11kg. None of my girls reached that weight until they were over 12 months. They all loved it, and I found it to be a lifesaver for me. My 13 month old still uses it. She's 8.6kg, so still some time left for her to keep using it.

I have one i borrowed from my sister and to be honest i dont really use it very often at all. My bub is almost 4 months.
In saying that though my sisters bub used it up until she lent it to me when she was 8 months.
I think they are good for settling hard to settle babies but i tend to think thry are over used alot and some babies are missing out on valuable floor time by spending too long in swings.
It also becomes a safety issue as they get older and able to move more as a pp pointed out.

I brought to 2nd hand ones and use them everyday for my twins. I already have a 5 & 3 yr old so I put them in it everyday and I got both for $100 on a local facebook buy & sell page. I certainly wouldnt of bought them brand new the ones I got are $220 each best $100 ive spent
