I have polished floors throughout my house. The previous owners lifted carpets and I suspect did the polishing themselves. They are now down to bare wood in places.

The entire house needs resanding, resealing and in some rooms the boards need partial replacement. Some are squeaky, some are broken and some are noticeably uneven (I am on concrete stumps but suspect the subfloor is dodgy in parts).

My question is: what's the best plan of attack? I don't have a carpeted room into which to move all the furniture. Should I do the floors in halves? That would make sense from the furniture storage point of view but would mean double the disruption. I know we're in for dust and smell from the sealants. Or should I just get all the furniture moved into storage and do the lot, and go away for a week? I've heard of people hiring a storage cube and putting the lot into that on their front yard. Anyone done that?

All brilliant suggestions welcome. I am kicking myself very hard that I didn't get the floors done before we moved in.

We did ours in 2 halves. It was disruptive but was bearable. We did move out overnight (stayed at my mums) the night of the polishing though. The fumes made it hard to breathe properly. I think water based isn't as fumy but I didn't like the finish as much.

We moved all our furniture into a storage cube and did the lot at once. It was easier and cheaper that way. It was also great to have a big clean out!

Not sure, this was something we considered when DH (then DP) bought this house and we were planning on moving in together. We decided to delay the move date and had the floors, painting etc done while it was still vacant. Not much help to you, I know.

Do you have a garage that you can move furniture into? Or a garage that maybe you could hire from one of your neighbours for a week (if you are on good terms with them). Otherwise, a storage container on your property sounds like a good idea.

Can I say, if you are thinking of painting inside at all, I'd do it at the same time (well, before sanding the floors). If you are going to be moving your stuff out, get as much benefit from it as you can.

No brilliant ideas here.... but ours desperately need doing too and I am really putting it off due to the inconvenience.

I think we are going to do half at a time.
We actually did do half already when we moved in 6 years ago because we pulled out walls etc and there were bare patches. The two front rooms are now desperately needing doing and since one will be changed from an office into a nursery for the new bub we should do it sooner rather than later so there are not too many fumes hanging around. Not looking forward to it.

My parents polished the floors in their living areas. Mum sent my sister and me away for a week with Dad but she and my brother couldn't come (work maybe?). They put the furniture in the bedrooms and went in and out through the back door and my brother's bedroom window! I don't know what they ate though because they couldn't get to the kitchen.

We had to have new boards put in the original part of the house when we did a renovation. The guy who did the sanding etc used a product which i think had a 24 hour drying time. It was designed for floors that had to be done quickly.

We ripped up carpet and some of our floors had shellac on them, we got professionals in and delayed moving for a few weeks, which I am so glad we did , it enabled them to work more easily however the mess and then then smell, we wanted the least maintenance and the strong stuff so hard to dent ...the smell it work t least a week before I could go in!!!!

A friend has lovely floor boards but didn't coat the, the same now every dent shows ....we had the stuff they put in pubs and shops etc....

If you can get a storage pod I would move out and do it all at once ..,,,
