New DD had her weigh with child health today at the drop in clinic and it wasnt good news.
Her original weigh at day 5 by the home visit midwive showed a drop of 360 grams from her birthweight. ( just within the ok range) Her weight today at day 9 has shown a total of 380 grams loss from her birth weight. Child health want me to supplement feed on top of the breastfeeds with either EBM or formula and come back to get her reweighed on wednesday. Anyone any similar experiences? Between feeding and expressing for the EBM i am starting to feel like a cow. |

DS was a big baby (4.15kg) and lost more than 10% of his weight in the first week, so I was told to express extra milk for him. I did this, but he didn't really want it and we'd be fighting to get it into him. All he'd want to do was go to sleep. I think he'd gained enough weight after another week, allowing us to stop attempting to give him extra. I didn't want to do formula and no one insisted on it. DS wouldn't have taken it, anyway.
It caused me a lot of extra stress, with worrying about his weight and with the constant feeding/expressing, so I know how you're feeling! |

Hi, a 10 day old baby who is 380g under birth weight, in this situation I'd be doing exactly what your chn has suggested, breast feed (perhaps switch feeding and using breast compressions to prompt baby to suckle) and express after every feed, giving baby ebm after every feed or formula if required.
http://kellymom.com/health/growth/weight-gain_increase/ Hopefully this will only be a short term thing. Perhaps 8 or more feeds each 24 hrs. I agree with pp in finding a LC to review how your baby is bfing, something is not right for a weight loss to have occured. How did bfing go with your other children? All the best. |

Breastfeeding went ok with the others although my next youngest was FTT due to medical issues so a bit hard to tell. i have had 3 midwives, and the chn check her latc and its good. She is pooing and weeing often, and even after one of her marathon 4 hour cluster feeds i was still able to express so they dont think supply is an issue. I am still booked into seeing a LC on monday.
Sorry for the typing/ spelling errors. i am typing while BF..... |

Because she has only dropped 20 g in the last 5 days her weight could be interpreted as static and when a baby has static weight they can have quite a "good" output, ie still wee and poo!
I think it's great you are seeing a LC on Monday as she can do a thorough bfing assessment and ideally watch a feed and assess milk transfer/drinking. If you try some switch feeding (ie > than 2 sides) and some breast compressions, combined with extra breast milk that will hopefully boost milk intake and lead to some growth by Monday. I hope that what happens for both of you. All the best. eta, there was a thread a little while back about a baby weight and wondering if it was accurate (I think it was quite a drop) so I suppose that is always a consideration, ie that the scales may not be accurate but making an effort to increase milk intake will not hurt your baby, but it does mean more work for you though! Good luck |
