So I returned to the doctor's office today and got the results of my tests.
I thought the issue was most likely going to be thyroid. But no... I'm having all those awful hot flushes and night sweats... He confirmed.. it's premature menopause!! Dude, I just had twins 8 months ago (ICSI / IVF). I am shell-shocked... I am only 34. The doctor doesn't want me to start on HRT until I try some chinese herbal medicine. Maybe that might improve symptoms in the short-term. Apparently there is a risk of ovarian cancer if starting on HRT. Have any of you experienced premature (or early) menopause after a recent pregnancy? |

I would go and see an endocrinologist to check diagnosis is correct and to discuss treatment options. Chinese herbs unlikely to protect your bones etc.

I had a very similar experience. Without wanting to be disrespectful or rude, your GP is not equipped to manage this situation. .... Get a referral to an endocrinologist. This is important.
For women that go into premature menopause there is no increased risk of ovarian cancer when taking HRT because the HRT is simply replacing the hormones that should be produced by your body at that stage in your life. There is however, an increased risk of osteoarthritis and a range of other conditions if you do not replace those hormones until the age when menopause would normally occur. And to be honest, your GP should know this. I am all for alternative and complementary therapies and use them often, however in this case NO. You need to see a specialist. This can have a big impact on your long term health. See an endocrinologist and THEN seek alternative therapies, if you want to. Good luck with it, I hope you are feeling better soon. |

I'd find a new doctor to be honest. If your GP's first suggestion is Chinese medicine and not a specialist doctor there is a very big problem.

Yes it can happen. A friend of mine was exactly like what you described. Had her boy and then premature menopause. She never had her period since giving birth and until now hasn't been able to have another baby. Have you checked your ovarian reserve via AMH test?
