lalaloopsy or other dolls?

I see a lot of people are buying lalaloopsy dolls. They are certianly bright and colourful but they seem kind of expensive. Are these dolls from a tvshow? We are looking for a nice doll for dd who will be 3 in a few weeks (she has a baby born and the like from dd2) and are a little stumped on what to get. Lallaoopsy seem to be popular atm but if their popularity stems from a tv show then I'm not really interested given dd isn't clamouring for it. Is there any other reasons taht the doll is popular? Does anyone have any recommendations for a doll for a 3 year old? Preferably one that isn't too lifelike in all it does. Thanks
