Hello Everyone,

So I am 14 weeks pregnant today and I so badly want to have a 3D scan to know the gender of the baby.

But I have already had 3 US and kind getting worried about so many US. I am traveling in 2 weeks and wont be in Australia for my 18 week scan...

Looking forward for suggestions....

Will you be able to have your scan when you arrive back?
Whilst I'm not 100% sure I think you can have the 18 week scan anywhere from 18-22 weeks.

If your care provider hasn't mentioned any possible issues I'm sure there is nothing wrong.

Well i am gonna be in India... and its illegal there to find out the gender of the baby before it is born...

I imagine you mean that it is illegal to have a test to find out the sex of a baby during pregnancy in India. Not that it is illegal to know. Are you coming back to Australia before the birth?

You just have to decide which you want most - to know or to avoid any possible risks of the scan.

The problem is, having a 3D scan will not guarantee you will be able to see gender any more than a 2D scan, especially earlier in pregnancy. I had 3D scans done with both of mine and the gender was not visible in 3D mode until after 30 weeks, but was identifiable on a 2D scan.

You could be wasting your money, though you'd get cute pictures. When are you coming back?

I had a really good chat with a friend who's a veterinary ultrasonographer about safety of multiple scans - the only concern is that there is a very very slight statistical decrease in birth weight and left handedness in the children of women who have had regular ultrsounds (like monthly) - barely statistical and, of course those being monitored so closely probably are being done so due to some concern so probably more prone to lower birth weight babies. She did comment that ultrasound tends to 'excite' foetuses - ie they become more active throughout the scan - probably beccause it's a sound wave going into a fluid space.
So 1 extra ultrasound wouldn't concern me at all. BUT I don't think it's a guarantee that the sex will be obvious.

When will you be back in Australia?

(PS the above comments refer to medically necessary B mode ultrasounds. There is some slight concern that gated doppler ultrasounds as used to determine a foetuses heartbeat might generate a small amount of heat and could potentially cause some harm if used for long periods of time or very regularly.

If i were you I would book a scan just before I was due to depart, not only for render purposes but also to make sure everything is in tip top shape.

I travelled in India during my pregnancy and had the unfortunate experience of spotting whilst I was away. I went to a very large (well respected hospital) with my 2 Indian friends. One is a surgeon and the other is an OBGYN.

They did an ultrasound and I was told my bubs had past away. I was incredibly distressed obviously but was also pressured to take an abortion pill to speed the miscarriage. I refused this and waited for a week to mc naturally. When that didn't happen I found a very high tech ultrasound place who confirmed that my baby was very much alive and well. He is now 4.

I had lived in India before and know the medical system quite well, it was just very unfortunate. The ultrasound machine was to blame I believe. I would make sure everything is well and truly in place properly before you leave.
