Arrival of new baby, Toddler now having night terrors

Hi I'm at my wits end!!! My 20 months old DS has now started having night terrors and waking up and is inconsolable overnight every night.. I can't settle him the cot he has to be picked up and I'm wondering if this is from his new baby sister who is 4 months old.. He loves her and is great with her but DS has become super clingy since he saw me take the baby to a doctors appointment without him and his once fine drop offs at childcare are now a screaming match... I can't spend too letting him scream overnight as I don't want him to wake the baby and I don't mind picking him up every time but sometimes it takes 2-3 hours to put him down or settle him and I'm wondering if there is an easier way especially since DD has just hit the 4 month sleep regression and is waking more often too.. Did your toddlers sleep go pear shaped a few months after a new baby arrived and how long did it last?

My DD1 was 2 when DD2 arrived. After about a month DD1 started having nightmares and her sleep went backwards. It probably lasted about two months. The MCHN told me that at 2 their imaginations start to kick in, so they begin imaginative play with dolls etc but it can also result in nightmares and night terrors. I could definitely tell the difference between the nightmares and a normal wake up in the middle of the night and being a bit groggy and needing a resettle. We just rode it out with lots of cuddles and reassurance. In order for anyone to get any sleep we had DD1 come in our bed quite a few times though, and then a bit of retraining when the wake ups weren't terrified ones. It wasn't easy, and with a new baby we just gave in and did whatever meant we all got the most sleep.

Be careful. If its proper night terrors (as opposed to nightmares) then the worst thing you can do is interact with or comfort them. There is an old thread hang on, I'll find it.
