I have a 2 wk old who I have found if I cannot get him to fall asleep if I put on some music and sing to him I can usually settle him down.

Now my music of choice (that has worked) has been Two Princes by the Spin Doctors, Killing In The Name Of by RATM and a couple of Pearl Jam songs. MIL was disgusted that I would sing these songs to my DS as the lyrics are not child friendly.

Problem is I don't know any child friendly songs.

Can anyone point me in the direction of good songs that have helped putting your children to bed?

There is a range of lullaby versions of rock song out on CD. Rolling stones, U2, all sorts of bands. I think most baby stores sell them, but honestly, sing what YOU like and what works. The baby can't understand lyrics for YEARS!

most stores have lullaby CD's and Playschool CD's.
My mum gave me a really nice CD for my baby a few years ago which is guitar versions of lullabies from all over the world. It's lovely!

That's was my argument. I forgot about those lullaby CD's. Will look into them.

I think my DS is showing great taste in music and really I would het to damage his taste in music by subjecting him to kids music

As with pp sing what you like. We have some kids music, Teddy Rock is great, but our kids have grown up listening to what we like. There most requested music is The Ramones.

My DD didn't give a crap what I sang, sometimes I justed sing "Go to sleep baby' in a happy voice when she was really testing my nerves

He's too little to understand the words yet so sing whatever you like!

I've always sung rock songs to my kids. One of the ways my aspie boy likes to calm is for me to sing him a "lullaby", "one he's never heard before". We've done everything from XTC to Kiss to Killing Heidi a and all points in between. As a result he has not only varied musical tastes but also a good working knowlege of 70s,80s & 90s music

Haha, don't worry about it! I sing Beatles songs to DS, often changing the lyrics to suit the mood, he also likes Robbie Williams and 80s music - we were all rocking out to "Funky Town" and C&C Music Factory the other day! Plus DH can get him to sleep listening to Metallica, and most recently to podcasts of the Economist. I dream that DS will be a finance whiz with interesting taste in music!

Music was the key to settling my children as newborns too.

With DD1 it turned out being a particular 'mix tape' CD I'd listened to alot whilst pregnant. It had heaps of Michael Buble, Alan Jackson, Keith Urban and Il Divo on it. It's still her favourite CD to this day.

DD2 was a little trickier cos I didnt have time to listen to music whilst pregnant the 2nd time around (chasing a toddler around.) Turned out her sleep key music was (pains me to say it) In the Night Garden & Giggle and Hoot so I made up a 'mix tape' CD of all that kind of stuff for her and bingo she was instantly soothed and settled whenever she heard it.

Both girls were sleeping 6hrs stretches by 6wo so long as their CDs were on (softly) on random repeat in their nursery.

Like the others have said, it's the rhythm that works - not the lyrics. Sing/play whatever music works.
