I think it's about time I bought some baby clothes, as i'm due in mid January. This is baby number two and last time I bought waaaay too much. So this time I only want to buy what I will actually need and use.

Anyone out there have a good checklist of what to buy, and what sizes? DD was born in Norway and the sizes are different, it was also winter when she was born so all her old clothes are too thick (and the new baby is a boy). We are in Brisbane if that helps.

I hope this post makes sense, i'm pretty tired atm.

Thanks original.gif

No checklist I'm afraid but what I found useful:
At least 4-6 onesies in size 0000, given its summer maybe ones with no legs
Another 6-10 onesies in size 000, no legs and short sleeves
Singlets x10 in 000 (doesn't matter if they are big on a newborn). If its really humid where you are I'm guessing you may use singlets only at home and not need as many onesies as those in a colder climate.
A few pairs of socks

That's all you need at the start I think, people do give you clothes but to be honest most people buy little two piece outfits - cute for during the day but not suitable to sleep in especially overnight.

Congrats and good luck!

Agree with bluewondersuit's advice. I've also gotten a few long sleeve/leg options for night time as DH freezes us with the air con.

I also love muslin wraps to swaddle.

I've been getting some shorts too as I don't like bare skin rubbing on car seat straps.

That's about it at our place.

My DD was a Brisbane in January baby. Never doing that again! Next time I plan to be heavily pregnant in much cooler weather.

DD wore mainly just a singlet and nappy at home under the ceiling fan and/or pedestal fan. For sleeping she was swaddled in a muslin wrap. Sometimes we took off her singlet for sleeping and she was just in a nappy and the muslin.

If she wore more than that it was generally a sleeveless or short sleeved onesie without legs. Sometimes shorts and a short sleeved shirt. When we went to the blissfully airconditioned shopping centres I put "normal" clothes on her eg pretty frilly dress, top with short sleeves, leggings, socks, etc. I also took a light blanket to put over her in her pram.

The clothes you need for your baby will depend on whether you will be in a/c a lot or not. We didn't have a/c so that's why DD wore very little. If we had a/c she probably would have needed slightly warmer clothes. What you will probably need will be basically some singlets, short sleeved tops, shorts, short sleeved/sleeveless onesies, a few pairs of socks in case of cold feet, some nice clothes for going out/special occasions, and a handful of warmer clothes. Maybe 2 light coats, 2 or 3 long pairs of pants, and maybe 2 long sleeved shirts for those rare nights when it is cool in summer.

Depending on how big your baby is, you'll need some 0000 and 000. My DD was 8lb4oz or 3.7kg and she fit into 0000 for about 2 months. Lots of other EBers in other threads have had their babies go straight into 000.

I did find that even though it was hot and stuffy in the RBWH during the day, it was very cold at night. DD was dressed in a long sleeved, long legged onesie, singlet, muslin wrap, and an extra blanket tucked over her. One night is was so cold that I had to move her bassinet to the other side of my bed so that she was away from aircon vent because her little face was getting so cold. I almost had to ask for an extra blanket for myself, and wished I had packed bedsocks.

I had my first baby this February in Perth, so like you will experience OP, it was hot! Even though we had the a/c on 24/7, I still dressed her quite lightly.

She lived in short sleeve/leg outfits and a muslin wrap, with a Cotten blanket over the whole lot when in bed. Or sometimes a long sleeve but short leg (she very quickly established that she liked her arms out of the wrap).

If you don't have a/c, I'd say a singlet and nappy may suffice!

Just stick to the rule of one layer more than you are wearing.

ETA: I just read the above post and it reminded me that a girlfriend said her hospital room was freezing as well (can't remember what time of year). They give you clothes & blankets for the baby when you are in hospital so just go to the nursery and get more if you need it... but at home you'll figure it out.

I'm in Brisbane and my 11w bub lives in short sleeve no leg bodysuits. Depending on how often you plan on washing, you really don't need that many clothes, and they grow so quickly as newborns.

I have around 4 plain bodysuits from target for everyday type wear plus around 4 nicer one's for going out (a few of these are rompers so have short legs like shorts). I also have a few really sweet but impractical outfits given as gifts which we haven't used yet.

I have way too many singlets and aren't using them at all at the moment. If it's too hot, I put the air con on. And it's not cold enough to put a singlet on under the bodysuit even at night. That said, DD is either in my arms during the day getting body heat or swaddled in muslin if sleeping.

I have 3 long sleeve long leg bodysuits that aren't getting used at all these days (were a few weeks ago tho). Only one pair of socks for use when in shopping centers etc; haven't needed any more than one pair.

I really wouldn't go overboard. I have too many clothes and feel guilty knowing she just won't get the wear out of them.

For sizes, this will depend entirely on how big your bub is when born. DD was premmie (2.17kg) so was in 00000 for awhile. Is in 0000 now (is 4kg) and likely to be for at least a couple more weeks.

Our baby is in a singlet during the day & cloth nappy.

At night he sleeps in a singlet & sleeping bag (cotton) or muslin wrap.

We got loads of singlets, it's just too hot to wear much else.

I got a few 000 sized short sleeved onesies, then we were gifted a whole bunch of clothing from family & friends.

My first was born in London in winter and this time around number two is to be born in Brisbane at the end of Jan so I'm in the same boat as you. Went way overboard last time and just want the basics at least until she's here and I know what size she'll be. I'm just going with vests/onsies and sleepsuits and a few cute summer outfits (couldn't resist). Although it's hot as hell here we have the air con on pretty constantly so I figure baby will need the extra layer that a sleepsuit will provide.

I'm going to pop into Mothercare tomorrow to buy sleepsuits as I found them to be the best last time around. They have the integrated fold over scratch mitts which were great for DD1. The quality is also good.

DD1 was tiny so I'm going to buy some tiny baby and some newborn. Knowing my luck this one will be huge and won't get any wear out of the little clothes. Sod's law I guess.
