DH and I are planning to TTC soon and I would like a water birth for my forth & final baby. I'd like to go to St George Birthing Centre and I was just wondering a few things....

•How soon would I have to put my name down? I know of a few people who have been keen but missed out on a spot.

•Is there anything that would rule me out for a water birth or the birthing centre? I had BP issues with DS1 & DS2 but nothing with DS3. Have had 3 uncomplicated delivers previously. Am overweight but no history of GD.

Hi, I had 2 water births at the birth centre and I am also booked to have my 3rd child there. I have booked in as soon as I had a positive pregnancy test, before seeing the doctor for a blood test, so at about 4 weeks each time. I have had friends miss out when they rang at 6 weeks. So it seems best to ring as soon as you know.

In regards to health issues that would preclude you from giving birth at the birth centre, I cannot answer. They do have an obstetrician that will review your history and all of your test results to determine if the birth centre is safe for you, they do this throughout your pregnancy although you don't generally meet them. I assume if they determine you are high risk you will need to meet with the OB and may be moved into the normal birthing suite.

I would ring and book in as soon as you know you are pregnant and discuss any health issues then or at your first appointment with the midwife which is usually around 14 weeks.
