My lovely FIL has recently eliminated preservatives from his diet for health reasons. I always make sure we have preservative-free meals when he comes to visit, but there are so many everyday foods which contain preservatives, margarine, wine, bread...
I want to surprise him with a package of food he can eat safely, things he might simply be going without, but I need ideas! Today I made a batch of tomato sauce. What else is impossible to buy at the shops, but easily made preservative-free at home? This post has been edited by BabyGabi: 20/11/2012, 04:40 PM |

What about home made bread?
Jam You could make some pizza bases and pizza sauce. Home made biscuits. This post has been edited by Dylan's Mummy: 20/11/2012, 05:06 PM |

Does sugar or salt count as a preservative in this instance?

Sugar and salt are fine AFAIK. He certainly eats them!
Jam and biscuits are great ideas! Thanks! |

You could give butter a go, and make scones with the buttermilk. Jams, spreads, sauces would be a good idea too. Perhaps some biscuits, cakes or slices.
ETA: pasta, bread (could freeze the dough so he would just need to defrost and bake, pretty sure that's something that can be done). Perhaps ask him what he misses or likes the most? This post has been edited by RunawayPrincess: 20/11/2012, 05:23 PM |

Go into an organic store? They generally have a lot of packaged stuff that is preservative free.

I don't understand. Are there ingredients that are called something else. I usually look for the word Preservative which usually has a 200 number after it. I don't find it difficult to buy things without it.
Butter, tomato sauce, bread etc Sure some brands have it, but it is usually easy to find those that don't. |
