I did a bit of a trinny & Suzannah on my wardrobe yesterday and threw out heaps of stuff ....but I've got a pile of stuff in really good condition which for one reason or another I won't wear anymore (maternity clothes etc) ...and baby stuff as well, so I thought I might try selling it. Even if I only get $100 for the whole lot hey- that's $100! I'm a complete novice at this so not sure whether to go down the eBay path or gumtree..anyone have any recommendation either way? I am registered at eBay to buy stuff and I have a PayPal account. From what I can tell eBay takes a cut of any money I may get, whereas gumtree seems to be a free ride...? Any tips or experiences would be welcome! Thanks!

I've sold a lot of baby clothes on eBay but by the time eBay took their percentage and the hassle of going to the post office it just wasn't worth the time or money. Plus I found people weren't willing to bid too much on eBay knowing the postage of about $6 on top made a bargain not quite a bargain. I like that gumtree is free and they come to you.

For the things that I buy on online auction sites, I've found ebay to have a bigger range and better quality of items. This is particularly true for clothing, in my experience.

Because of this I'd be inclined to go with Ebay, but I do understand your hesitation due to fees and such. I don't think the postage pain is such a big deal if you make all of your auctions end at around the same time so that you only do one trip to the post office for everything all together, or get prepaid satchels for postage.

Me too. I've sold mainly toys that the children have grown out of, a few books, things like that, but it is so much more convenient than eBay.

OP there are also the buy and sell groups on facebook (if you're on facebook). that's how i've been selling bits and pieces lately, it's still local pick up, and no fees

What about a buy/sell/swap facebook page? Some areas have ones dedicated to baby & kids stuff. In our last town the stuff moved very quickly... A very effective way of buying & selling. My new town has just started one. I will definately be using this option when it is time to get rid of our stuff!

I've sold quite a bit successfully on gumtree - it's great cause it's free! I would try there first.

Thanks for your replies everyone...I am on Facebook so I will check out the buy and sell groups there...

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for reselling a designer item? I have one piece which is a Dolce & Gobbana silk top..it was a present from a friend of my mothers (she lives overseas), its a lovely top, it just looks awful on me! I imagine I might be able to re sell it for a fairly decent price, however it may not attract many offers on eBay or gumtree. There used to be a place near where I live (inner west Sydney) which specialised in "pre loved" designer wear, but they have closed down. Any recommendations would be welcome! Thanks

most states/locations will have a baby and kids buy and sell facebook page. I have found these great to sell of maternity items, toys and kids clothing. It's free and like gumtree they come to you.
