I'm not looking for specific medical advice, but....

DS is booked in to have grommets inserted tomorrow morning. He had a terrible night last night and I'm wondering if he might have an ear infection. (Before DD had her grommets inserted she grew a new infection while she was on antibiotics )

Anyway, before spending hours at a weekend clinic, does anyone know whether the surgeon will still insert them tomorrow if he does have an infection?

I would say no. I don't think they do any surgery if you are unwell.

Call the surgeons office first thing tomorrow and ask. They would run into this situation a lot I'm sure!

ETA: Anaesthetists may want to assess your child first thing as well to make sure their lungs are clear. Most anaesthetists I've worked with will happily sedate someone with a basic head cold, but lung involvement, no way.

I'd be spending hours at the medical centre to get the diagnosis.

Surgery will not be performed if there is an infection due to potential issues with anaesthetic.

I second the ring the clinic .... But I would of thought they would still do it, unless he had a temperature ?????they did with my ds, he desperately needed the grommets inserted again and there was such a build up of fluid they needed to let it drain ...all the best

Thanks everyone. Took him to the drs and sure enough he has developed a moderate ear infection despite the preventative antibiotics. The dr said that they will probably still operate as he doesn't have a temp.

Yes they did my sons with an active ear infection despite being on ABs. There was masses of gunk to drain out and it was quite inflamed so he was in a fair bit of pain after the op for a few days which they said wasn't usual. He had some pain killing drops at first, then Nurofen.
