Hi Guys,

I've just bought a 3 bedroom house with 1 bathroom and toilet, 1 living area and small kitchen....but I'm happy as it has a dishwasher! The house is for myself and 2 kids so i don't really need 20 bedrooms, theatre room and a state of the art outdoor area. Nor could I afford one!

It seems that many people now are wanting a bigger and better home, I'm beginning to wonder what will happen when it comes time to sell my normal house and everyone wants a mcmansion. The house has a cottage feel to it with a beautiful front cottage garden. It's an area that i like and feel safe, picturesque street etc.

I'm not aspiring to a mansion, is this common??
I'd rather put the extra time, money and energy into travelling and doing things we enjoy and stay living in a smaller homey house.

We have a big house so no. But I also have five kids and we take up all the space

I long for the day it is just me and I can live in a small place.

I'm the same as you. I live in a 3 bedroom townhouse. I want to upgrade the garden because it's just dirt atm, but once I've done that, this place will be perfect. We hope to have 1 child, and raise them here too.

Yes I definitely think 4+ bedrooms will have much better resale later, we're in a three bedroom small house and its affordable for us at the present. I'd just like a double garage! With a smaller house the rooms can look cluttered, that's my only gripe.

We want to ultimately build our own house and it will be much bigger BUT with some important caveats.

We want a more functional house to suit our needs. There will need to be 4 bedrooms and guest rooms. W plan to make the living areas much smaller than is fashionable these days and make it so that large areas of the house can be closed off for prolonged periods to make heating etc more efficient ie like the guest wing. It will be very well insulated and double glazed with under floor heating. Yes, we will want a home theatre and gym but not something that has massive open plan expenses of tiled floor like the McMansions.

I hope that it almost becomes part of the landscape and then only when people go inside do they realize how big it actually is. That is the dream.....

After our kids grow up, well then I don't know...we may be well over the whole big house thing! I know my parents are over it.

Yes and no .... I always remember that I hate cleaning and DH only has time to look after a small yard like one we have. I jar a cleaner and it's so hard to find someone reliable!
So it's back to the no way.

I used to. We've had to turn our 2 beddy into a 4 beddy to make room for home office and extra kidlet, but it's relatively small (1 living area, 1 bathroom).

I always wanted to live in a McMansion on the hill, but so much has happened to us in this house, I've spent 6 years making it and the garden my own, I don't want to leave! I'd like to pay the mortgage off sooner and invest in other things. When I look at the floor plans of the houses I use to aspire to I wonder 'what on earth would I do with all that space?' I'm sure I could fill it up, but that would proabably mean an accumulation of crap. Not to mention cost of electricity and heating!

We don't own yet, but if we were to buy we wouldn't be upgrading size-wise much, if at all.
We're in a 3 bedroom right now, and FIL, the owner, is sort of hoping we'll take over the mortgage one day soon.
We might need one more bedroom if we have another child, but only because we need the study as a study!

We are building our home at the moment, and it is probably on the small side compared to others in the street. But it is perfect for us, and for the next 20 years we hope. We designed it around function and useability, rather that sheer size.
Our first home was a three bedroom cottage on a tiny square of land, so we've definitely been there. But being the person I am (issues with clutter and messiness), it would have driven me crazy to have 2 kids there. I need to be able to put things away so that my mind can be at peace.
So we designed a house with plenty of storage space and areas where mess can be made.
I have no desire to upgrade to a mansion, Mc- or otherwise, at any point in the future.
