I came in here for traffic.

I bought my work's laptop home this weekend. It has a finger-tough mouse pad. I want to plug in the mouse from my home computer. How do I get the laptop to recognise it?

If it helps, it's a HP Elite Book, using Windows 7

Oh no. The laptop is off-line. I can only connect it to the internet when I am at work.

Stupid question but I assume you did try to plug it in? Most usb mice should just work. The Internet is probably set up to go through a proxy at work you should be able to go to the Internet settings and turn that off.

Maybe you need admin privileges if you need to instal drivers onto a work laptop.

Our mouse only has a cord - we're not that high tech!
I plugged it in, I tried looking in settings but all I could find was how to vary the features of the connected mouse.

When I am at work I plug the laptop in to a docking station and a corded mouse plugs into the station, it works automatically.

I can't get visio to work anyhow, so that is my next problem! Argh!!

the document opens but all the menu options are greyed out, so I can't actually edit it, which is the whole reason I bought the laptop home.

Would the two problems be related?

Your situation sounds similar to mine in that I can't bring my laptop home to work (it also docks to my workstation at the office like yours does) because it won't recognise my home wifi due to security reasons, unless I have work Telstra USB stick.

So I use my own laptop & dial in with RSA token ID.
