Hi,

I've just completed my first year of my Nursing degree. I absolutely LOVE it and have very much enjoyed the past year. Unfortunately, due to medical reasons I am going to have to try a get my clinical placement deferred. Has anyone done this before? Can you even get a placement deferred? I have contacted the relevant person today - just waiting a reply.

Realistically, I am not so sure I can continue at all. But I hang on to the hope that something can be done to help me so that I can function in a way that is safe to my potential patients. I am not in that place at the moment, and have to be realistic.

Unfortunately, if I don't complete this placement I fail that unit - therefore have not "technically" completed my first year.

Has anyone deferred a clinical placement? I know, worse case, that I should be able to get a withdrawal without academic penalty. However, I had a scholarship this year and if I fail this unit by not doing this placement, I lose my scholarship completely. Messy situation.

I am not a nursing student but I do have 3 clinical placements to do.

As I have young kids and no family to mind them, it's really not at all realistic for me to work 40 hours a week for free and put 2 in full time day care and 1 in before and afternoon school care. Not only would I not even get a place in daycare for the 6 weeks only, but I couldn't afford it!!!!

Many of my courses have placement as a pre requisite. Just last week though I emailed my course co-ordinator and asked if he could possibly over ride that for me. I explained that due to my circumstances, I really wanted to do all my theory course work first and do placement 1,2,3 right at the very end before graduation. This was approved so I wont be going on placement now til 2015.

Hopefully you can work out something with your people OP. It's easy for the late teens that I go to uni with, whose parents still do their laundry, to just go off and work for nothing and not have to worry about kids and bills!! I am so glad my uni are flexible and understand that mature age students can't always drop everything and go with the program as it's designed.

I am so glad your Uni was able to work around you. Unfortunately, I very highly doubt something like this could be done in Nursing, as the clinical placement truly is invaluable. I learned more in my first placement than I did throughout the entire for trimester. The other issue is, this placement is part of my unit. Don't do it - I fail.

in my nursing degree, we have so many students that we have like 4 blocks of placement being completed.

first block was in october
second in novemeber
third is early january
fourth is late january

so if there is a problem we were able to change the time that we were able to go if someone swapped with us

do you have this or are all the students doign clinical at the same time.. i am sure if things are bad they may be able to hold you off but then you need a faciliator to be there too..

Good luck OP, I remember you posting before about your medical condition and your nursing studies.

FWIW I have known people who have had to change their placement, I can't remember what conditions were involved though.

Is doing less shifts a week an option? So spreading the placement out?

I emailed the unit chair on the weekend and received a phone call this morning. I have an incredibly supportive and understanding Uni. My placement has been deferred til next year.

I am still able to do the units I enrolled in for the first half next year, but not the second half til I've done this placement, as it's a pre-requistite unit.
