We would like to stay this side of the city but are prepared to move to be in the zone for a good school for DS. That's why I'm asking now (he is only 2) we are starting to look at buying a house and schooling will be a major factor in our location choice.

So tell me in the Northern suburbs and North-East suburbs (not too close to CBD as its too pricey) what suburbs/schools would you recommend? Not too phased by public/private as the quality of the school is what matters to us.

Two things....
Different schools are "good" to different people. So I love an academic school and other people love one with great drama or art or multi age or whatever floats your boat!
So if you can give us more of an idea of what school you are looking for that might help. Of course you probably don't know cos your kid is two!

Second, and I didn't take this advice, try to think not only of primary zones but secondary zones. My secondary zoned high school is not right for us (again, some people love it but most locals don't go there cos it's not 'academic') but I didn't' even think of that when we moved here. Now my son is in high school. It does happen! Say, as a different example, Collingwood college is loved by some and avoided by many.

I have heard anecdotally that some of the Ivanhoe schools are good, is that the sort of area you are after? Not many public high schools round there though I think? Some travel down to Kew. But several private. Wait till someone more local to there chimes in cos it's not my area.

It's hard to say what kind of school but I think an all-rounder would be best. We are academically minded people but I wouldn't want to exclude other areas if they become of interest to him IYKWIM?

Ivanhoe is a possibility for sure- not prepared to head down Kew way...
