Father Dougal for the Papacy!
I bought an ASUS notebook last year for about $300ish? For internet and watching dvds it is just fine.

I suspect it would suck for gaming though.

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur.
What does "nothing fancy" mean?

Do you need a CD/DVD drive, or will USB suffice?
Will you be doing lots of word processing? Can you work with small keyboard buttons or do you need something closer to full size?
Do you need to transport it, so weight will be a factor, or is it a "kitchen bench" PC?

A bit of word processing. More for the internet & iTunes. I would like a disc drive but understand that that's a bit passe. Small laptop & keyboard buttons are fine. I won't be transporting it much, and even if I did I wouldn't mind carrying extra weight. Thank you :-)

Honestly, I would go into a JB hifi or a WoW sight & Sound (if there are still any around!) and have a look at them in person.

I have a HP Notebook, it's excellent. Only 11 inches, so light to put on your lap, good inbuilt speakers, but with a plug you can use for headphones or external speakers. No disc drive, but wireless and bluetoothing.

Try Greys Online they are an auction company which my husband bought both of our lappys off recently. They courier it to you if its not in the same state but they also have a warehouse here in melbourne for other auction items e.g. whitegoods, kitchens, bathrooms etc

Go for a Toshiba, they are the best quality brand on the market.

This one would suit you perfectly: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/toshiba-sat...00x-laptop.html
