We are traveling to NYC in January, have been there quite a few times but this is our first time with new DS. We're keen to have kitchen/ette as meals won't quite be the same so wondering if anyone can recommend apartments they've stayed in ? We only need a studio or 1 bedder.

I used AirBnB and we had a great experience.
I won't recommend where we stayed, while it was great it's not child friendly.

Thanks, I have seen air bnb also so am looking on there.

I was kind of thinking commercial apartments might be a better bet in terms of 'guaranteed' quality/cleanliness (yes I know commercial isn't always a guarantee !) but feel a tiny bit strange taking bub's into a person's apartment. Weird I know but just how I feel.

We recently returned from NYC and stayed in an apartment. We booked through airbnb as well but chose apartments supplied by vacation rentals which is a management company for holiday apartments. They are also known as vrotels on other sites. The difference with airbnb though is your monies are protected until you check in and are satisfied - as long as you pay via their system and not get asked to pay direct. Be careful as there are ALOT of scams in NY on apartment rentals as technically it is illegal in alot of circumstances.
The apartment we stayed in was fantastic but not suitable for a small child and stroller as it was on the 4 th floor of a walk up building. No lift. Sound like you might prefer a hotel with kitchenette

Forgot to mention where we stayed was not someone's apartment they lived in, it was strictly a holiday rental.

We stayed at Eastgate Tower HOtel. We had a one bedroom suite and it had an absolutely huge living room, dining room, full kitchen facilities, bathroom and a bedroom with two queen beds. TV in both living and bed room. The kitchen was small but had full size fridge and enormous stove. View of Empire State Building from kitchen.
It's an older facility, so furniture was a bit tired and dated but very clean and comfortable. Daily maid service.

It is a few blocks from Grand Central Station and a few blocks from the United Nations. EAsy walking distance.
We walked to Times Square easily with our six year old (often twice a day!). There are supermarkets around the corner and McDonalds, Pizza places and restaurants nearby.

They also have two bedroom suites with two bathrooms.
We found it extremely affordable and would stay there again.

Apparently short term apartment rentals in NYC are still illegal.
There is a proposal to change this, but it is not passed yet.

We stayed at Bubba and Bean Lodges on the upper east side. It's classed as a b and b because the owners live there (so all legal!), but it's actually little apartments (including kitchenette) in a brownstone on Lexington Ave near 101st St. It was really clean, nicely furnished, well run and a great place to stay. While it's away from the midtown area, the subway is a few minutes walk, and it's only about 10 minutes to Grand Central. It's close to Central Park and the museum mile. We would definitely stay there again.

Jerry, yes apartment rental in NYC is illegal but not if the owner lives in the same building, or if the apartment for rent is in a building with 3 or less apartments in it. The building we rented in had 3 apartments in it so technically is legal.
