I did my bloods yesterday and I know that the blood results would be available today for the scans people. I called the bloods testing group and they refused to give me my results saying:" We only let the scan people release results."
My scan is booked on Wed next week. I am wondering if anyone has received their blood results before their NT scan or ist always given together? I dont understand why they cant even indicate if its a potentially ok or not so ok situation to me. |

I work for one of the path labs who do 1st trimester screening. For a start results should never be given to patients over the phone as correct identification cannot be made therefore privacy rules are breached. Regarding the actual results - the risk ratio is made in combination with scan report, pt background risk and bloods. It is calculated b6 the

Sorry phone being a douche.
It is calculated by the us Dr not the path lab. All the path lab does is calculate the MoM for 3 hormones. If the lab were to tell you everything was fine based on your blood but your scan came back high risk then you would understandably be angry and upset. The risk ratio is usually given at time of scan if bloods done before but in some cases like mine the lab waits for more info from us practice before validating results. My fbhcg came back high so my risk was not calculated until weight, gestational age and how many babys was confirmed as those variables are relevant to the outcome |

I think its all put into a computer together - bloods and meaurements and age etc and a risk factor is given. The bloods alone may not tell you much thats why they dont do it that way.

I've never called the pathology lab for any results
AS PP's have said, the NT blood results are used by the ultrasound place to calculate your risk. You'll then need to discuss this risk rating with your caregiver (GP/midwife/OB). I don't imagine the bloods would give you much information on their own. I know doctors DO use them to ascertain the risk of other issues, but it's not like HCG or progesterone levels, or a positive/negative result. If you are really concerned, call your car giver and speak to them about the results...? FWIW, I had my bloods done at 10-ish weeks and my scan done at 12w1d. The ultrasound clinic did my scan, faxed off the request for my bloods and had the combined risk within 2 hours for me. I was able to call the ultrasound clinic and get the risk results. I've never been given my blood results on their own by my OB... |

You should never be given the results of anything over the phone by a lab person. These kind of things should always be discussed with you, whether in person or on the phone, by someone who you have a therapeutic relationship with, who can explain the meaning of the results to you with the appropriate medical knowledge, who can answer your questions and individualise the result in the overall clinical context. This especially applies to a test that is only half done! They can't give you a 1 in however many risk number, because it's the end result of multiple factors.
I know the wait sucks OP, but be patient. |
