Quack!
Yesterday ended the first week of classes at the university where I teach. I have about 90 students this semester, and as a matter of course I now ask them to please turn off their cell phones, pagers, etc. when they're in class. This semester is the first one in which EVERY ONE of my students has a cell phone.

I don't have one. I don't want one. I don't like talking on the phone, and I don't want to be accessible to anyone and everyone all the time. If there's an emergency, people know where to find me.

My question: is there anyone else out there WITHOUT a cell phone? If so, have you thought of getting one or do you want one? Or are you like me, and have made a deliberate decision to avoid them like the plague?

I used to be.. until two years ago when I started working freelance from home, I just had to be contactable all the time. This doesn't mean I am on the phone all day, but my clients have to be able to contact me whenever they need to.

Also, since having DS, I feel that having a mobile phone gives us some security in case of a car accident, emergency trips to hospital, etc. I can ALWAYS ring someone now, and people can ALWAYS ring me in case of emergencies, and that aspect of it I wouldn't want to go without anymore.

But I do understand what you are saying, I felt very strongly about not wanting a mobile phone in the past too.

I don't believe that's true anymore. For example, if something happens to our DS, where I needed to take him to hospital straight away (which happened once so far), I was relieved that I could ring my DH on his mobile. He travels by bus two hours a day from and to work, and without his mobile, I would not be able to contact him in case of an emergencies. That is the main reason why we both decided to get one.

I've heard Adam Spencer on Triple J talk about his hate of mobile phones & he refuses to own one. However, his partner Wil Anderson says that all that means is that Adam Spencer uses everybody else's mobile original.gif Not a bad idea.

I have one, but I hardly use it. I only use it incase the car breaks down or so I can phone DH from the supermarket & ask if we need milk.

I have one but hardly use it. I couldn't tell you the number off the top of my head, and very few of my friends have the number. (not because it's exclusive - I just haven't bothered), I can call DH's mobile for free on it, and because no-one calls me on it, I'm not forever paying to retrieve messages and then returning calls on it. It's a pre-paid and I put $50 on it months ago that is still keeping me going.

I don't dislike mobiles (except work ones
;p), I just don't use mine much.

Duckling - I don't like the thought of being contactable 24/7 either !

I hate talking on them, or listening to anyone on them.
I have a sister in QLD and we can ring each other on Optus-plan mobiles for a free chat ....

I tried it for a while (with my partners mobile) - but then I gave up and just ring her on the normal phone.

My partner keeps bugging me to take on his old mobile, but I don't want it. :confuse:

Yes, they're very useful, but they're not for me original.gif

Eagles may soar, but foxes dont get caught in plane engines
my work has 24/7 service and i'm in charge of the pager. If the pager goes off at 3am, then i need to organise a service car to get to whereever. I ALWAYS use my mobile for that - and the electricians ALWAYS use my mobile to contact me if there is a further problem (i.e. need fridgys/spare parts etc).

The work that i do (during the day)is such that i NEED to be contacted at all times by numerous people (accountants/solicitors - ATM builders, plumbers, tilers for the extension) and i'd MUCH rather they have my mobile than my home.

So far as *social* goes; it doesn't get used all that often; moreso for sms's (but i'm not a big fan of that, i'd rather just ring them)...

innocent bystander
I have one but usually forget to take it when I go out, but have started doing so as I babysit more kids as their parents need to contact me when I leave the house. But as a general rule i dont call anyone on it unless it is free calls after 8pm.

I have one that I NEVER use! It's there just in case. I often have friends who contact me by SMS, but I rarely check them (out of habit of ignoring my mobile) and I miss out on some important messages sometimes.

I really detest mobile phones though, but I have one because I have a daughter and want to be contacted anywhere. It's always charged and always on, but it's rarely used by me anymore, LOL.

So I don't think you're alone.
