(forgive me for posting this in travel too, I wasn't sure of the best place)

My brother needs to travel from Brisbane to Sydney on Saturday to look at a second hand car to buy for his family. The flight is going to cost about $300 on way.

Year ago airlines would do standby flights....do they still do them? Or something similar? He needs to get to Sydney in the morning in order to check out the car and if it's okay, buy it and get to an RTA to transfer the details and then drive back to Brisbane in time for work on Sunday afternoon so he would need to get an early morning flight on Saturday.

Is it worth going to the airport early and hoping to jump on - is it any cheaper, does anyone know?

Also if the car is no good, he'll need a return flight home - that's quite a bit of money, but that's the risk I guess.

Any advice...? Thanks!!

I imagine its all done on the Internet now. It wouldn't be cheaper at the airport.

The cheap "stand-by" tickets don't exist anymore. Generally the closer to travel date, the more expensive the ticket.

Give me my coffee and no one gets hurt!!!
With the advent of discount airlines, standby tickets ceased to exist.

Has he tried Tiger? Webjet shows he could get up and back on Sunday for $under $150. But he needs to be flexible with times.

Oh and don't book through webjet if you can help it. Go direct to the airline. I got stung with a $35 booking fee last time I used them, where if I'd booked direct, I'd have saved that.
