Leaving DS with grandparents

I'm thinking of leaving my DS (almost 3 years old) with his grandparents for 5-7 days while I have to go out of town (3 hours drive away) for IVF. They are happy to do it, and he has visited them before, but always with me there! I have never been away from him for more than a night (and that was with my DH to care for him). DH is away overseas with work so he can't look after him this time. What do you think? Seems OK, right? I'm sure he will be fine, though he will miss me! It's probably more me learning to let go LOL

I would have no problem leaving my son with familiar, trusted and loving grandparents for that length of time.

I would definitely do it. It would be great for your DS to spend the time with his grandparents and vice-versa. And although you would definitely miss him, it might be good for you too! I could only dream of that much me time. You could call him each night if you wanted too - I would go for it.

Yes - I've done it. My mum and brother looked after our boys when the kids were 2 1/2 and 5 years old while we went on a much-needed week long break. They had a great time and it was really good for our relationship.

Can you leave him for a night just to get used to sleeping over before you take the 5-7day trip?

DD was all sorted to stay with my IL's when I had my 2nd baby but she had never had a night away from both mum and dad. We did a test weekend a few months before my due date. All was fine. It will be great for both of you!

Thanks everyone! Makes me feel better about doing it - I need to remind myself he's not a baby anymore :-) I'm sure he will have a great time, and I'm getting kinda excited about all that time to myself (even though some of it will be IVF)!

We looked after out 5 year old grandson and he flew from Canberra on his own to be with us. He had a great time for a week or more and thoroughly enjoyed himself and he got one on one attention, which he loved.

I would have no problems with it myself. DS1 and DS2 have spent lots of time with my parents and always ask to go see them. I would also be fine with either of them staying with MIL although they would probably initially want to come home as she lives interstate and doesn't see them much.
